WBBL finals: Sydney Thunder beat Melbourne Stars to become new champions

A superb all-round effort helped Sydney Thunder defeat Melbourne Stars in the finals of WBBL 6 played at North Oval, Sydney on Saturday.

Melbourne Stars captain Meg Lanning won the bat flip and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for Stars as Ismail produced a beauty to dismiss Elysse Villani. The pitch had some seam movement as Thunder bowlers exploited the conditions brilliantly. Meg Lanning played some lovely shots while du Preez also struggled against Thunder bowlers. Johnson struck again to get rid of du Preez to leave Stars in trouble. At the end of the first six overs, Stars scored 20 for 2.

Ismail produced a cracker to get rid of Meg Lanning to leave Stars in big trouble. Thunder bowlers kept on asking tough questions that Stars batters did not have answers. Sutherland provided some resistance for Stars with a run ball 20 while Brunt remained not out on 22 off 27 balls. Thunder never allowed Stars batters to score runs easily and restricted them to 86 for 9 in 20 overs. Ismail and Johnson took 2 wickets each while Bates, Knight, Darlington, and Smith took 1 wicket each.

Chasing 87 runs to win, Tammy Beaumont and Trenaman made a steady start to the innings with lovely strokes putting Stars bowlers under pressure. Brunt got the breakthrough for Stars dismissing Beaumont. At the end of the first six overs, Thunder looked in a comfortable position at 30 for 1.

After the field restrictions, Flintoff dismissed Trenaman and then Johnson got out cheaply. Haynes and Knight kept their composure hitting boundaries at will. Knight hit the winning runs with a six to help Thunder win the match by 7 wickets with 38 balls to spare. Knight and Haynes added unbeaten 33 runs.

For her figures of 2 for 12 in four overs, Ismail was named the player of the match award. Sydney Thunder claimed their 2nd WBBL title.

Sydney Thunder 87 for 3 in 13.4 overs ( Knight 26*, Trenaman 23, Haynes 21*, Brunt 1/24) beat Melbourne Stars 86 for 9 in 20 overs ( Brunt 22*, Sutherland 20, Ismail 2/12, Johnson 2/11) by 7 wickets.
