Women’s Big Bash League Semi-finals 1: Melbourne Stars beat Perth Scorchers to reach their maiden finals

 

Melbourne Stars produced a dominating performance to defeat Perth Scorchers easily in the first semi-finals played at North Oval, Sydney on Wednesday.

Melbourne Stars captain Meg Lanning won the toss and decided to bowl first. It was an ideal start for Stars who did not allow Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney to score run easily making life tough for the Scorchers. At the end of the first six overs, Scorchers made 32 for 0.

Anna King was bought into the attack and dismissed Sophie Devine to end the opening partnership. Scorchers openers added 32 runs for the opening wicket. King struck again dismissing Amy Jones making life tough for the opposition. A superb direct hit by Osborne ended the innings for Piparo.

King struck again to dismiss the dangerous Beth Mooney to leave Scorchers in big trouble at 51 for 4. Heather Graham and Nicole Bolton took some time before taking the attack to Stars bowling. Graham played some lovely shots off Kings bowling. Sciver got rid of Graham trying to play a sweep shot and was plumb in front. Graham and Bolton added 31 runs for the 5th wicket.

Sarah Glenn and Bolton put some pressure on the Stars bowling with some lovely shots allowing Scorchers to go past the 100 runs mark. Day dismissed dangerous Glenn stumped by Faltum. Bolton hit some lovely shots and was run out off the final ball. At the end of the 20 overs, Scorchers made 125 for 8 in 20 overs.

Chasing a modest total of 126 runs to win, Ellyse Villani looked in great touch hitting some cracking shots. Sarah Glenn got rid of Villani with a simple catch to Graham. Sophie Devine produced a brilliant yorker dismissing Du Preez putting Melbourne Stars under pressure. Lanning and Nat Sciver showed their class with some lovely strokes. At the end of the first six overs, Stars scored 54 for 2.

Sarah Glenn gave away boundaries in the power play overs. Graham produced a cracker to dismiss Stars captain Lanning leaving Stars under some pressure. Sciver and Lanning added 40 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Scorchers bowlers kept a tight line and lengths against Sutherland not allowing her to score runs easily. The experienced Sciver hit the bad balls away for boundaries releasing all the pressure. Sutherland opened her arms and looked in decent touch. Sutherland hit the winning runs and helped Stars win the match by 7 wickets with 22 balls to spare. Sciver and Sutherland added unbeaten 67 runs for the 4th wicket.

Melbourne Stars 127 for 3 in 16.2 overs (Sciver 47*, Sutherland 30*, Graham 1/27, Glenn 1/29) beat Perth Scorchers 125 for 8 in 20 overs ( Nicole Bolton 32, Mooney 27, Anna King 3/16, Sophie Day 1/17) by 7 wickets

For her brilliant performance, Anna King was named the player of the match award. Brisbane Heats will take on Sydney Thunder in the second semi-finals tomorrow.
