Women’s Big Bash League Semi-finals 2: Sydney Thunder stun Brisbane Heats to qualify for the finals

It was an amazing game of cricket as Sydney Thunder stunned Brisbane Heats in the second semi-finals of the WBBL played at North Oval, Sydney on Thursday.

Brisbane Heats captain Jess Jonassen won the bat flip and decided to field first. Tammy Beaumont made a good start hitting 2 boundaries in the very first over. Trenaman also hit a boundary but was brilliantly run out by Kimmince. Beaumont looked confident with her strokes and put the Heats bowlers under pressure. Hancock got rid of Beaumont trying to hit a sweep shot giving a simple catch to Voll at short third man. At the end of the first six overs, Thunder scored 41 for 2.

Thunder captain Haynes and Knight struggled initially with their timing. Kimmince missed a golden chance to run out Haynes that could have changed the course of the game. de Klerk into the playing XI got rid of Heather Knight providing an easy catch to Jonassen at extra cover. Brisbane Heats bowlers kept a tight leash on the Thunder batters. Amelia Kerr dismissed Litchfield with a wrong un to leave Thunder in trouble.

A superb catch by Prestwidge at deep midwicket ended the innings for Johnson. Thunder captain Haynes provided some vital runs in the last 2 overs to help Thunder post a competitive total of 143 for 6 in 20 overs.

Chasing 144 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Heats as Grace Harris was bowled by Bates. Redmayne looked in decent touch putting the pressure on Sydney Thunder bowlers. Johnson struck off her first ball dismissing Redmayne. De Klerk played with intent and made the batting look easy. At the end of the first six overs, Brisbane Heats scored 35 for 2.

After the field restrictions, de Klerk hit the bad balls away for boundaries and made life tough for Thunder along with Jess Jonassen. Jonassen struggled initially with her timing. Darlington provided the much-needed breakthrough for Thunder dismissing Jonassen taking a simple caught and bowled chance. Jonassen and de Klerk added 46 runs for the 3rd wicket. A superb direct hit by Beaumont got rid of de Klerk to leave Heats in some trouble at 85 for 4.

Laura Kimmince took the attack to Smith in the 15th over taking her for 20 runs to make the situation easy for Brisbane Heats. The things looked out of hands when Voll was run out by Litchfield and then Amelia Kerr was run out in the same over to bring back Thunder into the game.

Kimmince initially survived a close shout as the bails did not fall. It was brilliant hitting by Kimmince making life tough for Thunder. Bates made an important breakthrough dismissing the dangerous batter Kimmince trying to reverse sweep hitting the pads and onto the stumps.

Darlington dismissed Charlie Knott with a brilliant yorker and then got rid of Prestwidge hitting inside edge onto the stumps to leave Brisbane Heats in tatters. Johnson ended the innings as she caught and bowled Kimmince helping Sydney Thunder a famous 12 runs win.

Heats choked under pressure badly with the things looking under control. Thunder looked calm and qualified for the finals.

Sydney Thunder 143 for 6 in 20 overs ( Haynes 48*, Beaumont 27, de Klerk 2/11, Hancock 1/19) beat Brisbane Heats 131 in 18.3 overs ( Laura Kimmince 37, Redymane 25, Darlington 3/19, Johnson 2/14) by 12 runs.

For her figures of 3 for 19 in 3 overs, Darlington was awarded the player of the match. Thunder will take on Melbourne Stars in the grand finale to be played on Saturday.
