Honours even at the end of the day 1
It was an exciting day of cricket as the first Pink ball
Test match between India and Australia played at Adelaide Oval on Thursday.
Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat
first. It was not an ideal start for the visitors as Prithvi Shaw was dismissed
off the very second ball by Mitchell Starc hitting inside edge onto the stumps.
Cheteshwar Pujara survived a close catch as it did not carry to Tim Paine. Mayank
Agarwal and Pujara looked out of sorts against top quality Australian bowling. Both
batsmen survived few anxious calls before Mayank Agarwal hit the first boundary
off the day.
Pat Cummins produced a beauty to dismiss Mayank Agarwal to
end 32 runs stand for the 2nd wicket. Virat Kohli came to the crease
and looked solid as ever. India went into lunch break with the scoreboard reading
41 for 2.
After the lunch break, Nathan Lyon was bought into the
attack as Kohli and Pujara put some pressure on the off-spinner. India could
have been in more trouble as Tim Paine decided to not review a caught behind as
the hotspot showed edge. Pujara looked more assured and hit his first boundary
off the innings. He followed up with his second boundary.
Pujara survived another few anxious moments against Lyon.
Lyon finally got rid of Pujara via a review. The umpire gave it not out and the
decision was overturned as there was an edge on the gloves. Pujara and Kohli
added 68 runs for the 3rd wicket. Ajiyanka Rahane looked solid with
solid defensive technique. It was a good session of play as India went into the
tea break at 107 for 3.
In the third session of play the experienced duo of Kohli and
Rahane played with intent putting pressure on Australian bowlers. Lyon troubled
the Indian batsmen with bounce and spin. Kohli completed his fifty 123 balls while
Rahane also looked impressive. Australian captain Paine tried all the combinations
to dismiss the pair, but nothing worked.
A mix-up between Rahane and Kohli resulted in a run-out of the
Indian captain Kohli. The experienced duo added 88 runs for the 4th
wicket. Tim Paine decided to take the second new ball immediately. Mitchell
Starc produced a superb delivery dismissing Rahane leaving India in some
trouble. Hazlewood and Starc troubled the Indian batsmen with the second new ball.
Hazlewood dismissed Hanuma Vihari to put the visitors under backfoot.
Ravichandran Ashwin and Wriddihman Saha played some lovely
strokes against the tiring Australian pacers adding unbeaten 27 runs for the 7th
wicket. India ended the first day at 233 for 6.
India 233 for 6 in 89 overs (Kohli 74, Pujara 43, Rahane 42,
Starc 2/49, Cummins 1/42)
