Horrifying batting performance leads India to defeat in the first Test
Thanks to a superb bowling performance by Hazlewood and
Cummins, Australia came back strongly to crush India by 8 wickets in the first
Test match played at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide on Saturday.
Starting on the overnight score of 9 for 1, Mayank Agarwal
and Bumrah looked decent before Pat Cummins got the breakthrough dismissing
Agarwal with a simple return catch. Cummins then produced a beauty to get rid
of Pujara to leave India in some trouble. Josh Hazlewood made life tough for
the Indians as he dismissed Mayank Agarwal off his first ball and then
dismissed Rahane to leave India in massive trouble at 15 for 5.
The Indian captain Virat Kohli looked tentative hitting a
boundary before being caught by Cameron Green as the umpires decided to check
the catch, but the decision was retained. Hazlewood and Cummins broke the
backbone of the Indian batting line-up. Hazlewood struck again to dismiss Saha and
then Hanuma Vihari.
Mohammed Shami suffered a blow on his hands by a steep
bouncer by Pat Cummins. Shami decided to walk off as the Indian team was
bowled for their lowest total in Test cricket off 36. The Indian team gave a
paltry total of 90 runs.
Chasing 90 runs to win, Matthew Wade and Joe Burns looked
decent enough. At the end of the first session, Australia made 15 for 0. The Indian team was without their star bowler Mohammed Shami. After the tea break,
Wade and Burns played with intent putting pressure on the Indian bowlers.
Bumrah looked impressive but could not provide breakthroughs.
A superb effort by Wriddhiman Saha ran out Matthew Wade. The Australian openers
added 70 runs. Joe Burns looked in fine touch putting the bad balls away for
boundaries. R Ashwin dismissed Marnus Labuschagne to provide some spark. Joe
Burns hit the winning runs and completed his fifty off 63 balls. Australia
maintained their unbeaten streak in Day-night Test matches winning it by 8
wickets.
Australia 191 in 72.1 overs (Paine 73*, Labuschagne 47,
Ashwin 4/55, Umesh Yadav 3/40) by 62 runs and 93 for 2 in 21 overs ( Joe Burns
51*, Wade 33, Ashwin 1/16) beat 244 in 93.1 overs (Kohli 74, Pujara 43, Rahane
42, Starc 4/53, Cummins 3/48) and 36 in 21.2 overs ( Mayank Agarwal 9, Hazlewood
5/8, Cummins 4/21) by 8 wickets.
For his 73*, Tim Paine was named the
man of the match award. Australia takes a 1-0 lead in the series. The second test match begins on 26th December at MCG.
