India versus Australia 2nd Test 1st Day: Bowlers put India on top

 

Thanks to a superb bowling effort by all Indian bowlers, they ended the first day of the 2nd Test match in a good position played at iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG on Saturday.

Australian captain Tim Paine won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start for the hosts as Jasprit Bumrah produced a beauty getting rid of Joe Burns for a duck. Umesh Yadav bowled with pace and looked decent enough with his swing and seam. Matthew Wade played with intent and put the Indian bowlers under some pressure.

Ajiyanka Rahane decided to bring R Ashwin in the 11th over and troubled Labuschagne. Matthew Wade looked confident before trying to hit a big shot as Ravindra Jadeja took a good catch while Shubman Gill running back with him. R Ashwin spun the ball and troubled the Australian batsmen. He got rid of dangerous Smith as Cheteshwar Pujara took a good low catch at short leg to leave Australia in some trouble at 38 for 3.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly troubling the Australian batsmen. Travis Head looked clueless against R Ashwin's spin. Ravindra Jadeja was bought into the attack and spun the bowl. Marnus Labuschagne played some lovely shots against the spinners. Marnus Labuschagne survived a close LBW shout as the umpire gave it out and it was overturned due to going over the stumps. At the end of the first session, Australia made 65 for 3.

The Indian captain gave R Ashwin 2 overs spell before giving Mohammed Siraj and Umesh Yadav spell together. Travis Head and Labuschagne played with intent putting the bad balls away for boundaries to create enough pressure on the bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah was bought into the attack and got rid of Travis Head providing a simple catch to Rahane at gully. Head and Labuschagne added 86 runs for the 4th wicket.

The Indian team did plan well as Mohammed Siraj dismissed the dangerous Marnus Labuschagne with a good low catch by Shubman Gill to leave Australia in trouble. Tim Paine survived a close LBW shout as the decision was retained due to the umpire’s call. Australia went into the tea break at 136 for 5.

Tim Paine survived a controversial run-out due to a mix-up with Cameron Green. Mohammed Siraj on his debut was exceptional dismissing Cameron Green. Green decided to review the decision and it was retained due to the umpire’s call. Soon after, R Ashwin struck to get rid of Paine to leave Australia in massive trouble with a sharp catch by Vihari at backward short leg. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a stunning bouncer to get rid of Mitchell Starc making life tough for the hosts.

Nathan Lyon came to the crease and hit some lovely shots to put some pressure on the Indian bowlers. After being hit for 1 six and 1 four, Bumrah bowled a fuller delivery to dismiss Lyon. Ravindra Jadeja took the final wicket as Pat Cummins tried to get quick runs but was caught by Mohammed Siraj at deep midwicket to bowl out Australia for 195.

It was not an ideal start for the visitors as Mitchell Starc got rid of Mayank Agarwal as the decision was retained due to the umpire’s call. Shubman Gill looked a little edgy at the start and was dropped by Labuschagne. After that Gill played with intent along with Pujara. India ended the first day at 36 for 1 in a decent position.

India 36 for 1 in 11 overs ( Shubman Gill 28*, Pujara 7*, Starc 1/14) trail Australia 195 in 72.3 overs ( Marnus Labuschagne 48, Head 38, Bumrah 4/56, Ashwin 3/35) by 159 runs.
