India versus Australia 2nd Test 2nd Day: Ajiyanka Rahane century puts India in command
Thanks to a brilliant knock by stand-in captain Rahane, the
Indian Team ended the 2nd day of the 2nd Test match in a
commanding position played at Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG on Sunday.
Starting on the overnight score of 36 for 1, Shubman Gill
and Cheteshwar Pujara faced some top quality from Pat Cummins. Gill was lucky
enough as he inside edge going into for a boundary. Tim Paine decided not to
review the decision as there was a snick. The catches did not go to slips but
Australia remained relentless. Pat Cummins got the breakthrough for the hosts
as he dismissed Gill for a well-made 45. Gill and Pujara added 61 runs for the 2nd
wicket. A special one-handed catch by Paine ended the innings for Pujara to
leave India in some trouble.
Ajiyanka Rahane and Hanuma Vihari remained solid enough
against the top-quality bowling. The experienced duo made sure that India ended
the first session at 90 for 3.
Hanuma Vihari and Rahane began the second session off to a
solid start putting some pressure on Australian bowling. Nathan Lyon made the
breakthrough for the hosts dismissing Vihari trying to sweep the shot giving a
simple catch to Steve Smith. Vihari and Rahane added 52 runs for the 4th
wicket. Rishabh Pant looked in decent touch right from the word go putting pressure
on Australian bowlers. Rahane led from the front and completed his fifty off
111 balls. Mitchell Starc provided the much-needed breakthrough as Pant tried
to play a cut shot giving a simple catch to Paine. Chris Green dropped a tough
chance to dismiss Pant. Before the tea break, rain arrived with the scoreboard
reading 189 for 5 and umpires called tea. Pant and Rahane added 57 runs for the 5th wicket.
After a short rain delay break, Ajiyanka Rahane looked confident
with his stroke play against Nathan Lyon and the top-quality pace bowling of
Australia. Both batsmen showed their class making life tough for the hosts. Tim
Paine decided to take the second new ball immediately. Australia dropped
another chance as Rahane was given a reprieve by Steve Smith. Rahane and Jadeja
took the advantage of the tired Australian bowling. Both batsmen ran between
the wickets making life tough for the hosts.
Rahane completed a well-deserved century off 195 balls. Jadeja
also looked composed and steadied the innings for the visitors. Travis Head
dropped another chance off Rahane before the rain arrived. The Indian team ended
day 2 in a strong position at 277 for 5. Rahane and Jadeja added so far 104
runs for the 6th wicket.
India 277 for 5 in 91.3 overs ( Rahane 104*, Gill 45, Jadeja
40*, Starc 2/61, Cummins 2/71) lead Australia Australia 195 in 72.3 overs (
Marnus Labuschagne 48, Head 38, Bumrah 4/56, Ashwin 3/35) by 82 runs.
