New Zealand officially becomes the number 1 ranked Test team in the world

After defeating Pakistan in the first Test match at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui by 101 runs today, New Zealand officially became the number 1 ranked Test side in the world. It is a historic moment for the Kiwis as they dethroned Australia and go top of the rankings for the first time in their history.

Under the captaincy of Kane Williamson, New Zealand are a strong force to reckon especially in-home conditions. On the fifth and final day against Pakistan, Trent Boult began well removing Azhar Ali cheaply. Mohammad Rizwan and Fawad Alam kept the hosts at bay putting on 165 runs for the 5th wicket.

Jamieson struck to dismiss Mohmmad Rizwan ending a strong partnership. After that, the Kiwis bowlers kept the pressure on the Pakistani bowling. With the 11th wicket stand between Naseem and Shaheen Shah Afridi going, Santer produced a brilliant one-handed catch to dismiss Naseem with 27 balls to spare giving the hosts a thrilling 101 runs win.

New Zealand whitewashed a strong Indian side at home in 2020. They proved too strong for the West Indies side. By winning the second Test by an innings and 12 runs, Kiwis was decimal points behind the Australian side.

Kane Williamson played a superb knock in the first innings putting on a great display. He made 129 runs laying a strong foundation for Kiwis to post 431 runs. The bowlers did a superb job to bowl out Pakistan for 239. Kiwis openers Blundell and Latham laid a strong foundation as they declared their innings on 180 for 5 setting Pakistan 373 runs target.

New Zealand made their Test debut on 10th January 1930. They have played so far 445 matches with 104 wins, 175 losses, and 166 drawn matches with a win percentage of 23.37. Kiwis side had some top quality players like Daniel Vettori, Richard Hadlee, Chris Cairns, Shane Bond, Brendon McCullum.
