New Zealand versus Pakistan 1st Test 3rd Day: New Zealand in command despite Faheem Ashraf and Mohammad Rizwan fightback
Despite a superb batting effort by Mohammad Rizwan and
Faheem Ashraf, New Zealand ended the 3rd day of the 1st
Test match in a commanding position played at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on
Monday.
Starting on the overnight score of 30 for 1, it was not an
ideal start for the visitors as Kyle Jamieson got rid of Abid Ali with a
beauty. The Pakistani batsmen did not show any intent as Kiwis bowlers-built
pressure on the opposition. Boult struck to get rid of nightwatchmen Mohammad
Abbas. Azhar Ali and Haris Sohail were too cautious with their defense technique.
Tim Southee dismissed former Pakistan captain Azhar Ali with a review. The
umpire gave it out and the decision was upheld. Southee put the visitors under
immense pressure getting rid of Haris Sohail. With rain arrived, Pakistan went
into lunch break at 62 for 5.
There was a delay due to a rain break and the match started before the rain arrived again with the scoreboard reading 65 for 5. Fawad Alam looked composed
with his defense technique before Neil Wagner produced a beauty to dismiss
Alam. Alam and Rizwan added 28 runs for the 6th wicket. Rizwan and
Faheem Ashraf played with intent putting pressure back on Kiwis bowlers. Rain
arrived again with the scoreboard reading 112 for 6 before hailstorm arrived
and umpires called off tea.
After the tea break, Mohammad Rizwan and Faheem Ashraf put
the Kiwis bowlers under pressure with aggressive intent. Both batsmen created
enough pressure on Boult, Jameison, Southee, and other bowlers. Rizwan led from the
front to reach his fifty off 106 balls. Kiwis took the second new ball immediately
but Rizwan and Ashraf looked in fine touch.
Faheem Ashraf looked in fine touch reaching his fifty off 87
balls while Rizwan showed his class to put the Kiwis at bay. A superb direct hit by Santer resulted in Rizwan’s wicket. Rizwan and
Ashraf added 107 runs for the 7th wicket. Trent Boult produced a beauty
to dismiss Yasir Shah to leave Pakistan on brink of the follow-on.
Faheem Ashraf took the attack to Kiwis bowlers as he smacked
four boundaries off Tim Southee’s bowling. Shaheen Shah Afridi gave the strike to
Ashraf making sure that Pakistan survived follow-on. Neil Wagner got rid of
Afridi with a good bouncer hitting the gloves. Afridi and Ashraf added 39 runs
for the 9th wicket. Jamieson dismissed the dangerous Faheem Ashraf
for a superb fighting knock of 91. Kiwis bowled Pakistan for 239 with a lead of
192 runs in the first innings.
Pakistan 239 in 102.2 overs (Faheem Ashraf 91, Rizwan 71, Jamieson 3/35,
Wagner 2/50) trail New Zealand 431 in 155 overs ( Williamson 129, Watling 76,
Taylor 70, Shaheen Shah Afridi 4/109, Shah 3/113) 192 runs.
