New Zealand versus Pakistan 1st Test 4th Day: New Zealand on course for a win

Thanks to an all-round performance by Kiwis batsmen and quick wickets helped New Zealand ended the fourth day in a commanding position at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Tuesday.

After dismissing Pakistan for 239 runs in the first innings, Kiwis openers Tom Blundell and Tom Latham started off decently with good positive intent. Blundell made the batting look easy putting the pressure back on the Pakistani bowlers to reach his fifty off 87 balls. On the other hand, Latham played his usual self. New Zealand went into the lunch break at 98 for 0.

Mohammad Abbas provided the breakthrough for Pakistan getting rid of well-set Blundell. The Kiwis openers added 111 runs for the opening wicket. Kane Williamson played with intent and showed his class with some lovely boundaries. Latham completed his half-century off 107 balls. Naseem Shah gained confidence as he dismissed Latham, Williamson, and Henry Nicholls. BJ Watling was run out as he fell a yard short. Ross Taylor and Mitchell Santer played few balls before New Zealand declared their innings on 180 for 5 setting Pakistan 373 runs target.

It was an ideal start for the hosts as Trent Boult produced a beauty to dismiss Abid Ali in the first over. Tim Southee got rid of Shan Masood playing loose stroke to make life tough for the visitors. Haris Sohail and Azhar Ali helped Pakistan go into the tea break at 4 for 2.

After the tea break, Sohail and Azhar remained solid with their defensive technique making sure that they defy the Kiwis bowlers. Southee became the 3rd Kiwis bowlers to take 300 Test wickets dismissing Sohail. Sohail and Azhar Ali added 37 runs for the 3rd wicket.

Fawad Alam and Azhar Ali remained solid enough with their defensive technique making life tough for the hosts. Both batsmen added so far 34 runs for the 4th wicket as they ended on 71 for 3. Pakistan still need 302 runs to win and Kiwis need 7 wickets to win the first Test.
