New Zealand versus Pakistan 1st Test 5th Day: New Zealand edge past Pakistan in a thriller to win the first Test
Despite a brilliant effort by the Pakistani batsmen, New
Zealand held their nerves to win the first Test match in an epic contest played
at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui on Wednesday. With this win, New Zealand earned
important points in ICC Test Championship.
Starting on the overnight score of 71 for 3, Pakistan were
dealt an early blow as Trent Boult dismissed Azhar Ali with a simple catch to
Watling. Fawad Alam showed his class against top quality bowling of New Zealand
and remained steady. Mohammad Rizwan remained solid with solid defensive
technique. Pakistan went into the lunch break at 137 for 4.
After the lunch break, Fawad Alam reached his half-century
off 149 balls. Mohammad Rizwan and Fawad Alam kept the momentum going with
positive intent looking impressive frustrating the Kiwis bowlers. Kane
Williamson took the 2nd new ball immediately but Alam and Rizwan
remained cool with his technique. It was a superb batting display by Rizwan and
Alam kept their composure helping Pakistan end the second session at 215
for 4.
Mohammad Rizwan reached his half-century off 136 balls while
Fawad Alam completed a superb century off 236 balls to keep Pakistani’s hopes
alive. Kyle Jamieson broke the partnership by getting rid of Mohammad Rizwan with
a review. The umpire gave it out and the decision was upheld as out. Alam and
Rizwan added 165 runs for the 5th wicket. Wagner bowled his heart
out getting rid of well-set Fawad Alam to revive Kiwi's hopes of winning the
match.
Jamieson struck to get rid of Yasir Shah to leave Pakistan
on the brink of a win. After looking good, Wagner dismissed Faheem Ashraf
making life tough for the visitors. Mohammad Abbas and Shaheen Shah Afridi
remained solid with their defensive technique against top-quality Kiwi bowling.
Santer got rid of Abbas via review. Abbas was given out by the umpire and the decision remained out.
Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah tried their best to save
the game. Wagner, Boult, Southee, Jamieson bowled bouncers to the tailenders
but the number 10 and 11 kept on fighting for the team.
With 4.3 overs remaining, Mitchell Santer took a one-handed
catch to dismiss Naseem Shah as New Zealand won the match by 101 runs. Because of
this win, Kiwis became the number 1 Test side in the World dethroning Australia.

5 d in 45.3 overs ( Blundell 64, Latham 53, Naseem Shah 3/55) beat Pakistan 239
in 102.2 overs (Faheem Ashraf 91, Rizwan 71, Jamieson 3/35, Wagner 2/50) and 271
in 123.3 overs ( Fawad Alam 102, Mohammad Rizwan 60, Southee 2/33, Jamieson
2/35) by 101 runs.
For his captains knock of 129,
Kiwis captain Kane Williamson was named the man of the match award. New Zealand
takes a 1-0 lead in the series. The second and final Test match will be played
at Hagley Oval, Christchurch from 3rd January.
