This Day That Year: Indian star scored his maiden ODI international century
One of the best batsmen in all formats, Virat Kohli arrived at
the international arena in grand style as he scored his maiden international
century against Sri Lanka on 24th December 2009 at Eden Gardens,
Kolkata.
Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was a superb batting effort by the visitors as Upul Tharanga
118, Kumar Sangakkara 60, Mahela Jayewardene 33, Thisara Perera quickfire 31,
Kandamby 23 not out helped Sri Lanka post a competitive total of 315 for 6 in
50 overs.
Chasing 316 runs to win, India lost an early wicket of Virender
Sehwag cheaply. After that, the hosts lost their 2nd wicket of
Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli came to the crease and looked in sublime touch putting
pressure on the visitor’s bowlers along with Gambhir. Kohli took the advantage of
the dew conditions making life tough reaching his fifty off 52 balls while
Gambhir also completed his half-century off 51 balls.
Both batsmen looked in sensational touch making life tough
for the opposition. It was an amazing display of batting leaving the visitor's
bowlers in trouble. Kohli smacked his maiden ODI century off 110 balls while
Gambhir too reached his century off 101 balls. The partnership was broken as
Kohli was dismissed for 107 from 114 balls. Kohli and Gambhir added 224 runs
for the 3rd wicket to put the Sri Lankan bowlers under immense
pressure. Gambhir and Dinesh Karthik ensured that India chased down this
massive target by 7 wickets with 11 balls to spare. Gambhir dedicated the man
of the match award to young Kohli.
The Indian captain has been a consistent performer for Team
India. He is only second with most centuries in ODI format. Kohli showed
tremendous consistency being the leading run-getter in ODI format for the
last 4 years.
Currently, he has played 251 ODI matches (242 innings) and
scored 12040 with 43 centuries and 60 half-centuries. His career-best score came
against Pakistan during the 2012 Asia Cup 183. Kohli is the only player to
score 50 plus average in all formats of cricket.
Kohli finished sixth in terms of leading run-getter in ODI
format during 2020. He made 431 from 9 matches with 5 half-centuries, the best
score of 89.
