This Day That Year: Rohit Sharma created record in T20I match
The explosive right-handed batsman from Mumbai was at his
prime best during the 2nd T20I match against Sri Lanka played at
Holkar Stadium, Indore on 22nd December 2017.
Sri Lankan captain Thisara Perera won the toss and decided
to field first. India’s stand-in captain Rohit Sharma looked in great touch
right from the word go and put the Sri Lankan bowlers under immense pressure.
At the end of the first six overs, India scored 59 for 0.
Rohit put the Sri Lankan bowlers under serious pressure and
completed his fifty off just 23 balls to lay a strong foundation. The opening
partnership of Rohit and KL Rahul took the game away from the Sri Lankan side.
Rohit took the Sri Lankan bowlers apart to reach his century off just 35 balls.
This was the joint-fastest century in T20I cricket with David Miller.
Rohit Sharma's sensational innings came to an end as he tried to
hit a big shot giving a simple catch to Dananjaya. He made a brilliant 118 off
43 balls with 12 fours and 10 sixes at a strike rate of 274.42. MS Dhoni played
quickfire cameo scoring 28 from 21 deliveries while KL Rahul scored 89 off 49
balls. The Indian openers added 165 runs in 12.4 overs making life tough for
the opposition. Thanks to superb knocks, India posted 260 for 5 in 20 overs.
It was a tall ask for the Sri Lankan batsmen as they were
bundled out for 172. Despite Kusal Perera 77, Upul Tharanga 47, the visitors
fell short by a massive margin. For his superb knock, Rohit Sharma was named
the man of the match award.
During this match, there were many records created including
Rohit Sharma became the first batsman to score two T20I centuries and the
highest score by a batsman in this format. The opening pair of Rohit and Rahul
shared the highest partnership in the T20I format.
Indian team posted their highest total in T20I format and
joint second-highest total. It was a remarkable performance by Rohit who looked
in sublime touch on a placid batting pitch.
India 260 for 5 in 20 overs (Rohit Sharma 118, KL Rahul 89,
Thisara Perera 2/49) beat Sri Lanka 172 in 17.2 overs ( Kusal Perera 77,
Tharanga 47, Chahal 4/52, Kuldeep Yadav 3/52) by 88 runs.
