Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 Quarterfinals 4: Rajasthan beat Bihar in a close contest to enter semi-finals

Rajasthan experience came to the fore as they defeated Bihar in the 4th and final quarterfinals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 played at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Rajasthan captain Ashok Menaria won the toss and decided to bat first. It was an ideal decision as Ankit Lamba and wicket-keeper batsman Bharat Sharma provided a decent start with attacking stroke play putting pressure on the inexperienced Bihar side. At the end of the first six overs, Rajasthan made 42 for 0.

After the field restrictions, Sharma and Lamba made the batting look easy. Ashutosh Aman got the breakthrough for Bihar dismissing Sharma with a beauty. Rajasthan openers put on 59 runs for the opening wicket. A superb catch by Vikash Yadav ended the innings for Ashok Menaria to back Bihar into the match. Mahipal Lomror came to the crease and showed intent right from word go while Ankit Lamba struggled to hit runs.

Bihar fielding was not up to the mark as they dropped catches. Kashyap got the wicket of Ankit Lamba who tried hitting a big shot but gave a simple catch to Gani at covers. Lamba and Lomror added 49 runs for the 3rd wicket. Anuj Raj deceived Rajesh Bishnoi to put Rajasthan under some pressure. Lomror played with intent and reached his fifty off just 29 balls. Aman got rid of Arjit Gupta to end 25 runs stand for the 5th wicket. Lomror took the mantle smashing Aman for 20 runs in the final over helping Rajasthan post a competitive total of 164 for 5.

Chasing 165 runs to win, Babul Kumar started off the innings with 3 lovely boundaries off Akash Singh. Aniket Choudhary struck for Rajasthan dismissing Shahseem Rathour hitting the inside onto the stumps. Mangal Mahrour and Babul Kumar played with intent putting pressure on Rajasthan bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Bihar made 39 for 1.

After the field restrictions, a superb direct hit by Ravi Bishnoi ended the innings for Babul Kumar. Ravi Bishnoi was wayward in his first over. Mangal looked good hitting singles and hitting occasional boundaries. A superb catch by Lomror at long-off ensured that Gani was dismissed. Mangal completed his fifty off 48 balls and kept the hopes of Bihar alive. Ravi Bishnoi struck getting the wicket of Rahmatullah with a quicker delivery.

It was an uphill task for Bihar batsmen as Vikash Yadav tried his best along with Mangal. With 27 runs required off the final over, Aniket gave just 9 runs to give Rajasthan a 16 runs win and move into the semi-finals.

Rajasthan 164 for 5 in 20 overs ( Lomror 78*, Bharat Sharma 38, Ashutosh Aman 2/31,  Suraj Kashyap 2/28) beat Bihar 148 for 4 in 20 overs ( Mangal Mahrour 68*, Vikash Yadav 27*, Chandarpal Singh 1/21) by 16 runs.

Rajasthan will take on Tamil Nadu in the semi-finals on 29th January.
