Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy finals: Dominate Tamil Nadu beat Baroda to win the title
Tamil Nadu proved too strong as they defeated Baroda in an
emphatic manner of the 2021 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy finals played at Sardar
Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Tamil Nadu captain Dinesh Karthik won the toss and decided
to field first. It was an ideal start for TN as Baba Aparajith made an
important breakthrough getting the wicket of Rathva. The inform Kedar Devdhar
looked in sublime form before Siddharth dismissed him. Siddharth struck again
by getting the wicket of Smit Patel to leave Baroda in trouble. At the end of
the first six overs, Baroda made 28 for 3.
A superb combination effort by Arun Karthick and given to
Dinesh Karthik resulted in Bhanu Paina wicket to leave Baroda in tatters. Sai
Kishore was sensational giving away just 11 runs in his 4 overs and did not concede
any boundaries. Siddharth made an important breakthrough getting the wicket
Rajput with a simple return catch to leave Baroda in massive trouble and then
dismissed Kartik Kakade to leave Baroda at 36 for 6.
Atit Sheth and Vishnu Solanki provided some resistance with
positive hitting by Solanki keeping the scoreboard ticking. Sheth was dismissed
trying to smack a big shot giving an easy catch to Arun Karthick. Solanki and
Sheth added 58 runs for the 7th wicket. A superb combination run out by Arun Karthick
and Dinesh Karthik resulted in Vishnu Solanki’s wicket. Tamil Nadu restricted
Baroda for a modest total of 120 for 9 in 20 overs.
Chasing 121 runs to win, Narayan Jagadeesan and Hari
Nishanth provided a steady start with positive stroke play. Meriwala got the
breakthrough dismissing Jagadeesan. Tamil Nadu openers put on 26 runs. Hari
Nishanth looked in sublime touch as there was dew with the ball skidding on the
bat. At the end of the first six overs, Tamil Nadu made 38 for 1.
Kakade and Bhargav Bhatt were bought into the attack. Nishanth
took the attack and made the scoring easy. Pathan struck for Baroda as Bhatt
took a juggling catch at fine leg. Nishanth and Aparajith added 41 runs for the
2nd wicket. Baba Aparajith struggled with timing but Dinesh Karthik
hit some lovely boundaries to release some pressure. Sheth got the wicket of TN
captain providing an easy catch to Solanki at midwicket. Sharukh Khan survived
a close run out shout as he made just in while taking a risky second run.
Sharukh Khan smacked a six and four to help Tamil Nadu
register an emphatic 7 wickets win with 12 balls to spare. Tamil Nadu remained unbeaten
in the entire Syed Mushtaq Ali season. They lost to Karnataka by just 1 run
during the 2019/20 season.
This was Tamil Nadu’s second title in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy history. For his figures of 4 for 20 in 4 overs, M Siddharth was awarded the man of the match award.
