Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy quarterfinals 1: Punjab crush Karnataka to enter semi-finals

Punjab’s great form continued as they crushed defending Champions Karnataka in the first quarterfinals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 played at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad on Tuesday.

Punjab captain Mandeep Singh won the toss and decided to field first. Karnataka captain Karun Nair and Devdutt Paddikal began off steadily with some good strokes from Paddikal. Sandeep Sharma provided the breakthrough for Punjab as Karun Nair played a poor stroke giving a simple catch to Gurkeerat Singh Mann at mid-off.

Coming into the bowling attack, Kaul struck twice in his first over. A rash stroke by Devdutt Paddikal and then a superb catch by Markanade at short midwicket put Karnataka on the backfoot. Arshdeep Singh produced a beauty to get rid of BR Sharath with an easy catch by Abhishek Sharma at first slips to leave the defending Champions in tatters. At the end of the first six overs, Karnataka looked in massive trouble at 33 for 4.

After the field restrictions, Gopal and Joshi tried to steady the innings for Karnataka but Ramandeep Singh dismissed Gopal ending 25 runs stand for the 5th wicket. The Punjab bowlers kept on picking wickets at regular intervals to bowl out Karnataka for a paltry total of 87 in just 17.2 overs. For Punjab, Siddarth Kaul was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 15, Arshdeep Singh, Sandeep Sharma, and Ramandeep Singh grabbed 2 wickets each while Markande took 1 wicket.

Chasing a paltry total of 88 runs to win, Abishek Sharma was caught by Paddikal in the first over to give some boost for Karnataka. Prabhsimran Singh took the attack on Karnataka bowlers along with Mandeep Singh. Prabhsimran showed his class by stepping down the track and hitting them for boundaries while Mandeep steadied the youngster. At the end of the first six overs, Punjab looked in a comfortable position at 40 for 1.

Karun Nair bought in Shreyas Gopal and Pravin Dubey into the attack but both Punjab batsmen kept on ticking the scoreboard to ensure Punjab an emphatic 9 wickets win with 44 balls to spare. Mandeep Singh and Prabhsimran Singh added unbeaten 85 runs for the 2nd wicket.

Punjab 89 for 1 in 12.4 overs ( Prabhsimran Singh 49*, Mandeep Singh 35*, Mithun 1/11) beat Karnataka 87 in 17.2 overs ( Aniruddha Joshi 27, Siddarth Kaul 3/15, Arshdeep Singh 2/16) by 9 wickets.
