Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Semi-finals 2: All-round Baroda beat Punjab to enter the finals
A superb all-round performance helped Baroda beat Punjab
easily in the 2nd semi-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021
played at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad on Friday.
Punjab captain Mandeep Singh won the toss and decided to
field first. Ninad Rathva and Kedar Devdhar started off briskly putting
pressure on the Punjab bowlers. Rathva looked good before Siddarth Kaul
produced a beauty to dismiss Rathva for a run ball 15. Baroda openers put on 28
runs for the opening wicket. At the end of the first six overs, Baroda made 44
for 1.
After the field restrictions, Mayank Markande and Harpreet
Brar were bought into the attack by Mandeep Singh. Markande got rid of Solanki
who tried to reverse swing but was plumb in front of the wicket to leave Baroda
in some trouble. Baroda captain Devdhar and Karkade steadied the innings taking
singles and hitting boundaries at will. Karkade showed his intent making life
tough for Punjab. Mandeep Singh had to hobble off the field while saving a
boundary. Both batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking and put the Punjab bowlers
under pressure. Devdhar led from the front as he reached his fifty off 42 balls
with a massive six. Karkade also completed his maiden T20 fifty off 37 balls to
keep the momentum going. Kedar Devdhar fell in the last over as he gave a
simple catch to Abishek Sharma at extra cover. Devdhar and Karkade added 93
runs for the 3rd wicket. Atit Sheth also smacked in the final over
to help Baroda post 160 for 3 in 20 overs.
Chasing 161 runs to win, Abishek Sharma and Prabhsimran
Singh scored 6 runs in the first over. Meriawala produced a beauty to dismiss
Abishek Sharma. Anmolpreet Singh came to the crease instead of injured Mandeep
Singh.
Meriwala got rid of the dangerous Prabhsimran Singh to leave
Punjab in some trouble. Gurkeerat Singh Mann was dropped by B Pathan off his
own bowling. At the end of the first six overs, Punjab made 33 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Baroda bowlers kept tight
lines and lengths not allowing Punjab batsmen to score runs easily. Rathva got
the important wicket of Anmolpreet Singh in his first over. Anmolpreet and Mann
added 32 runs for the 3rd wicket. Ramandeep Singh struggled to time
the ball as the run-rate was climbing. Rathva struck again to dismiss Ramandeep
Singh leaving Punjab in big trouble at 70 for 4.
After smacking a six, B Pathan dismissed Gurkeerat Singh
Mann to make life tougher for Punjab. Mandeep Singh came to bat at number 6. He
played some lovely shots and remained not out on 42 off 24 balls but struggled
with his injury. Baroda restricted Punjab to 135 for 8 to give them a 25 runs
win.
Baroda 160 for 3 in 20 overs ( Kedar Devdhar 64, Karkade
53*, Markande 1/29) beat Punjab 135 for 8 in 20 overs ( Mandeep Singh 42*, Gurkeerat
Singh Mann 39, Meriwala 3/28, Rathva 2/18) by 25 runs.
Baroda will take on Tamil Nadu in the grand finale of the
tournament to be played on 31st January. For his superb knock of 64
from 49 balls, Baroda captain Kedar Devdhar was awarded the man of the match
