Indian team won their maiden T20I series on New Zealand soil
Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, the Indian Cricket Team
defeated New Zealand in a thrilling 3rd T20I played at Seddon Park,
Hamilton on 29th January 2020.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided
to field first. It was a flying start for the Indian team as Rohit Sharma and
KL Rahul took the attack to Kiwis bowlers. Rohit smashed 27 runs off Hamish
Bennett over to put pressure back on hosts. At the end of the first six overs,
India raced away to 69 for 0. During the first six overs, Rohit completed his fifty
off just 33 balls.
After the field restrictions, Rohit and Rahul kept the scoreboard
ticking. Colin de Grandhomme provided the breakthrough getting the wicket of KL
Rahul giving a simple catch to Munro at point. The Indian openers put on 89
runs to lay a strong foundation. India lost momentum as they lost the wickets of Rohit
Sharma and Shivam Dube in the same over. Shivam Dube was promoted to number 4
but failed to time the ball.
Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings for India
taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. Mitchell Santer got rid of
Iyer with a beauty of stumping by Seifert. Kohli and Iyer added 46 runs for the
4th wicket. Ravindra Jadeja and Manish Pandey put on 19 quickfire
runs off just 7 balls to help India post 179 for 5 in 20 overs.
Chasing 180 runs to win, Martin Guptill looked in great
touch putting the Indian bowlers under pressure. Before the end of the first
six overs, a superb catch by Sanju Samson resulted in Guptill’s wicket as New
Zealand scored 51 for 1.
Ravindra Jadeja took the wicket of Colin Munro with a beauty
of stumping. Kiwi captain Kane Williamson looked in sublime touch and put the
Indian bowlers under pressure. Mitchell Santer was promoted at number 4 but
Chahal got rid of the batsmen. Williamson showed his class and reached his
fifty off 28 balls. Williamson and de Grandhomme added 49 runs for the 4th
wicket as de Grandhomme contributed just 5 runs. With run rate climbing up,
Kiwis captain Williamson led from the front hitting Indian bowlers all over the
park.
Ross Taylor joined in and smashed vital runs to bring the
equation 9 from 6 balls. Mohammed Shami was smacked for a six off the first
ball. Shami got rid of Williamson trying to cut the shot providing a simple
catch to KL Rahul giving India some hope. Williamson made a superb 95 off 48
balls. With 1 run needed off 1 ball, Shami produced a brilliant yorker to help
India took the match into Super Over.
Batting first, Kane Williamson and Martin Guptill smacked 17
runs off Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling including a wide. In reply, Rohit Sharma was
lucky enough as Tim Seifert missed a golden chance while taking the second run.
With 10 runs required off 2 balls, Rohit smashed 2 successive sixes off Tim
Southee’s bowling to help India register a thrilling win.
For his match-winning knock of 65 and 2 sixes in Super Over,
Rohit Sharma was named the man of the match award.
