This Day That Year: Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy once more
It was a historic moment as Mumbai defeated Saurashtra in the
finals of the prestigious Ranji Trophy played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 28th
January 2012.
Starting on the overnight score of 287 for 6, Mumbai made 68
runs and were bowled out for 355 to take a massive lead of 207 runs. It was a
superb bowling effort by Mumbai bowlers as Ajit Agarkar and Dhawal Kulkarni
produced magical spells. Right from the word go, Agarkar and Kulkarni put the
Saurashtra batsmen under pressure. Dharmendra Singh Jadeja was the top scorer
for Saurashtra. Kulkarni grabbed 5 for 32 in 14.4 overs while Agarkar took 4
for 15 in 9 overs. Mumbai bowled out Saurashtra for 82.
It was a remarkable performance by Mumbai who won the title
for the record 40th time since the inception of the Ranji Trophy.
Mumbai captain Agarkar won the toss and decided to field first.
Kulkarni 4 for 24, Abishek Nayar 2 for 30 and Vishal
Dabholkar 2 for 14, Agarkar 1 for 33 helped Mumbai bowl out Saurashtra for just
148. In reply, Mumbai ended the first day at 19 for 0.
The second day saw the veteran Wasim Jaffer play with intent
and show the way making a superb 132. It was a superb batting effort by Mumbai
batsmen as Jaffer anchored the innings and put the Saurashtra bowlers under
pressure. Mumbai ended the second day in a strong position at 287 for 6.
After winning their 40th title in 2012, Mumbai
has been disappointing in the Ranji Trophy. Mumbai won the title again in 2015
beating Saurashtra in the finals. They also reached the finals in 2015/2016 the season before Gujarat won the title.
In 2017/18, 18/19 season, Vidarbha won the title on two
successive occasions. Under the leadership of Jaydev Unadkat, Saurashtra the
Ranji Trophy title for the first time in 2019/20.
