Australia versus New Zealand 1st T20I: Conway and Ish Sodhi leads New Zealand to a commanding win

Thanks to superb performances by Conway and Ish Sodhi, New Zealand registered an emphatic win in the first T20I played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Monday.

Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to field first. It was a perfect start for the visitors as Daniel Sams dismissed Martin Guptill off the third ball providing a simple catch to Ashton Agar at backward point. Punjab King's newly appointed Jhye Richardson produced a beauty getting rid of Tim Seifert.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson hit some cracking shots before a bottom edge went into the hands of Wade to leave the hosts in trouble at 19 for 3. At the end of the first six overs, Kiwis ended at 34 for 3.

Conway and Phillips steadied the ship for Kiwis hitting boundaries putting pressure back on the Australian bowlers. Conway made batting look easy and completed his fifty off 36 balls. Phillips played with intent rescuing the innings for hosts. Coming into the attack, Marcus Stoinis dismissed Glenn Phillips as Mitchell Marsh took a catch at covers. Conway and Philips added 74 runs for the 4th wicket.

James Neesham came to the batting crease and kept the momentum of the innings with aggressive hitting. Conway showed his class with innovative hitting making life tough for Australian bowlers. Jhye Richardson struck dismissing dangerous Neesham. Neesham and Conway added 47 runs for the 5th wicket.

Conway upped the ante in the last 3 overs while Mitchell Santer gave him good support. Conway played a special inning as he remained not out on 99 off 59 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes. He and Santer added 44 runs in 3.1 overs to help New Zealand post a competitive total of 184 for 5 in 20 overs.

Chasing 185 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for Australia as Australian captain Aaron Finch was dismissed in the first over by Tim Southee. Trent Boult got rid of debutant Joshua Philippe putting the visitors under immense pressure at 8 for 2.

New Zealand left Australia in tatters as Boult dismissed Wade while Southee struck to get rid of Maxwell. Mitchell Marsh played some brilliant shots to put some pressure on the hosts. At the end of the first six overs, Australia made 36 for 4.

Ish Sodhi struck immediately in his first over dismissing Marcus Stoinis cheaply. Marsh and Stoinis added 37 runs for the 5th wicket. Ashton Agar looked in decent touch with positive strokes putting some pressure on Kiwis bowlers. Jamieson dismissed the well-set Marsh to dent Australia’s chances of winning. Marsh and Agar added 42 runs for the 6th wicket. It was one-way traffic as Ish Sodhi and other Kiwis bowlers kept on picking wickets at regular intervals. New Zealand bowled out Australia for 131 registering a commanding 53 runs win.

New Zealand 184 for 5 in 20 overs (Conway 99*, Phillips 30, Jhye Richardson 2/31) beat Australia 131 in 17.3 overs (Mitchell Marsh 45, Agar 23, Ish Sodhi 4/28, Southee 2/10) by 53 runs.
