India versus England 3rd Test 1st Day: Axar Patel magic puts India in pole position

 

Thanks to a magical spell by Axar Patel, India ended the 1st day of the 3rd Test match in a commanding position played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

England captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bat first. Playing his 100th Test match, Ishant Sharma struck early for Indian team getting rid of Dom Sibley with a good delivery as Rohit Sharma took a sharp catch at second slips. Zak Crawley started off his innings that went to the boundary. Crawley made the batting look at ease hitting boundaries at will.

Axar Patel dismissed Jonny Bairstow on the first ball of the spell. Bairstow was given out and the decision was retained to leave England in some trouble at 27 for 2. Crawley looked in sublime touch as Patel’s bowl turned and bounced. It was amazing touch by Crawley making the batting look at ease. R Ashwin was bought into the attack and troubled the England batsmen. Crawley survived a close LBW shout given not out as India decided to review the decision. The decision was retained due to the umpires' call.

Crawley reached a well-deserved fifty off 68 balls. R Ashwin got the big wicket of Joe Root with good delivery. The umpire gave it out and the decision stayed it out. Root and Crawley added 47 runs for the 3rd wicket. Soon after, Patel dismissed Crawley with a beauty to leave England in trouble at 80 for 4. Axar Patel troubled Ollie Pope while Stokes struggled against Ashwin. The visitors ended the first session at 81 for 4.

The second session started off brilliantly for Team India as R Ashwin produced a beauty to dismiss Ollie Pope. Axar Patel then dismissed Ben Stokes with another good delivery leaving England in tatters. The England batsmen could not read the variations of Ashwin and Patel. Patel struck again with a quicker delivery disturbing the timber of Jofra Archer.

Jack Leach was caught brilliantly by Pujara at slips but went upstairs for a catch and the decision remained out. Stuart Broad survived two LBW shouts before Patel got his fifth wicket dismissing Broad who tried to sweep giving a simple catch to Bumrah. Ben Foakes who looked impressive was bowled out by Patel as India bowled out for a paltry total of 112.

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started off cautiously against Broad and Anderson. At the end of the second session, India made 5 for 0.

It was a cautious start by Rohit Sharma in the third session who showed some intent while Shubman Gill got off the mark with a boundary after some time. Jofra Archer was bought into the attack and dismissed Shubman Gill tried to pull the ball giving a simple catch to Crawley. The Indian openers added 33 runs. In the next over, Leach dismissed Pujara with good delivery.

Rohit Sharma looked positive with his intent putting some pressure on the England bowlers. Kohli hit some lovely boundaries and kept the scoreboard ticking. Rohit reached his fifty off 63 balls. The England fielding was not up to the mark as Ollie Pope dropped a simple chance to dismiss Kohli.

Rohit survived a close stumping call as Foakes whipped off the bails but the third umpire decided to give not out. Before the end of the play, Leach struck getting rid of Kohli with a bottom onto the stumps. Kohli and Rohit added 64 runs for the 3rd wicket. Ajiyanka Rahane and Rohit ensured that India ended the day at 99 for 3.
