India versus England 3rd Test 2nd Day: India crush England by 10 wickets to take a 2-1 lead
Thanks to another brilliant spell by Axar Patel and Ashwin,
India defeated England on the second day of the third Test match played at the
Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Starting on the overnight score of 99 for 3, Ajiyanka Rahane
faced troubles with Jack Leach and survived few close LBW shouts. Leach finally got
rid of Rahane with a quicker one giving England the breakthrough. It was an
amazing bowling display by Leach who then dismissed the inform Rohit Sharma. He
decided to review the decision but stayed it out due to the umpire's call. England
captain Joe Root produced a beauty getting the wicket of Pant with a superb catch by
Foakes.
Root then dismissed Washington Sundar with another beauty to
leave India on the backfoot. Axar Patel played a rash stroke giving Root his 3rd wicket of the innings. Ashwin hit some lovely boundaries and took most of the
strike. He then perished trying to hit a big shot giving a simple catch to
Crawley. Ishant Sharma provided some resistance smashing a six. Bumrah was
given out by the umpire and the decision was overturned it hit the inside edge.
Root grabbed his fifth wicket taking the wicket of Bumrah to bowl out India for
145 with a slender lead of 33 runs. The umpires decided to call tea break.
Axar Patel gave India a great start dismissing Zak Crawley
and Jonny Bairstow with good deliveries to leave England on the backfoot. Dom
Sibley and Joe Root provided some resistance before Patel got rid of Sibley
with a lovely catch by Pant. The umpire gave it out and the decision was upheld
as there was an edge. Ben Stokes played some attacking strokes against Ashwin
while Joe Root also looked good. Joe Root was given out by the umpire and the decision was overturned as it first bat before pad. Ashwin got rid of Stokes
for the 11th time in his Test career. Stokes and Root added 31 runs
for the 4th wicket.
Axar Patel produced a peach to dismiss Joe Root to leave
England in deep trouble. Ashwin then dismissed Ollie Pope with another beauty.
It was an amazing bowling display by Ashwin and Patel wreaking havoc among the
England batsmen. Ashwin dismissed Jofra Archer to get rid of his 400th Test
wicket. Jack Leach and Foakes provided some resistance before Patel dismissed
Foakes with another quicker delivery.
Ashwin struck again to dismiss Jack Leach providing a simple
catch to Rahane at slips. Washington Sundar was given his first over of the
match and dismissed James Anderson trying to reverse sweep as Pant took a good
catch to bowl out England for just 81. England set India 49 runs target.
In reply to 49 runs to win, Rohit Sharma looked in decent
touch coming down the track against Leach while Gill got off the mark. At the
end of the second session, India made 11 for 0.
After the dinner break, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill did
not hesitate to play strokes putting pressure on the England bowlers. Rohit ended
the match with a six helping Team India register an emphatic 2-1 lead in the series.
India 145 in 53.2 overs ( Rohit
Sharma 66, Ashwin 17, Kohli 27, Root 5/8, Leach 4/54) and 49 for 0 in 7.4 overs
( Rohit Sharma 25*, Gill 15* ) beat England 112 in 48.4 overs ( Zak Crawley 53,
Axar Patel 6/38, Ashwin 3/26) and 81 in 30.4 overs ( Ben Stokes 25, Root 19,
Patel 5/32, Ashwin 4/48) by 10 wickets.
With this win, India moved up to
the top of the ICC Test Championship points table. They need to ensure that they
draw or win the final Test match. The fourth and final Test will be played at
the same stadium from 4th March on the same ground.
For his 11 wickets in the match,
Axar Patel was named the man of the match award.
