New Zealand versus Australia 2nd T20I: New Zealand beat Australia in a thrilling contest
It was an amazing game of cricket as New Zealand defeated
Australia in a high-scoring thriller played at University Oval, Dunedin on Thursday.
Australia captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to field first. Martin Guptill started off brightly with attacking strokes. Kane Richardson got the breakthrough dismissing Tim Seifert trying to hit a big shot providing an easy catch to Finch. Guptill and Williamson steadied the Kiwis innings taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. At the end of the first six overs, New Zealand made 45 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Guptill upped the ante and
plundered the Australian bowling line-up. On the other hand, Williamson
provided good support to other batsmen. It was amazing hitting by Guptill who
reached his fifty off just 27 balls. Williamson kept on piling pressure with silk
touch and hitting abilities. Looking for a big shot to get his century, Guptill
was dismissed for a superb 97 off 50 balls. Guptill and Williamson added 131
runs for the 2nd wicket.
Kiwi captain Williamson remained solid and completed his
fifty off just 32 balls. Adam Zampa produced a good delivery to dismiss the
dangerous Williamson. Despite Kane Richardson taking wickets of Devon Conway
and Mitchell Santer, James Neesham blasted away the Australian bowling-line up
with 3 successive sixes off his first three balls. Neesham and Tim Southee
smashed 20 runs off Sams over to help New Zealand post a massive total of 219
for 7 in 20 overs. Neesham remained not out on quickfire 45 off 16 balls with 1
four and 6 sixes.
Chasing 220 runs to win, Matthew Wade and Aaron Finch made
an impressive start to the innings with aggressive intent. Southee provided the
breakthrough for New Zealand dismissing Wade trying to hit a big shot giving a
simple catch to Williamson at mid-off. Joshua Phillipe came to the crease and
played with positive intent while Aaron Finch struggled to time the ball. At
the end of the first six overs, Australia made 53 for 1.
After the field restrictions, a good catch by Glenn Phillips
ended the struggle for Aaron Finch. Finch and Phillipe added 36 runs for the 2nd
wicket. Glenn Maxwell’s poor form continued as a sensational catch by Ish Sodhi
ended his innings cheaply. Phillippe impressed with stroke play and put the
Kiwis bowlers under pressure. Santer dismissed well-set Phillippe, Ashton Agar
and Mitchell Marsh in the same over to leave Australia on the backfoot at 113
for 6.
Marcus Stoinis and Daniel Sams joined together with amazing
hitting abilities. Both batsmen smashed 25 runs off Tim Southee in the 16th
over to give Australia do create the impossible. Stoinis completed fifty off
just 22 balls and kept the Aussie in the hunt. Boult bowled a brilliant 18th
over giving away just 6 runs.
With 15 runs required off the last over, the golden arm
James Neesham provided the much-needed breakthrough dismissing Sams. Sams and
Stoinis added 92 runs off 37 balls. Stoinis smacked a six to make the equation
9 from 2 balls. Neesham got rid of Stoinis to survive a scare. Jhye Richardson ended
the innings with a boundary as New Zealand won the match by just 4 runs.
