Stats: R Ashwin became the fourth Indian bowler to take 400 wickets in Test matches
By picking the wicket of Jofra Archer on the 2nd
day of the 3rd Test match at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on
Thursday, Ravichandran Ashwin became the fourth Indian bowler to achieve the remarkable feat of taking 400 wickets in Test matches.
During the first Test
match at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, Ashwin took 9 wickets including 6 for 61
in the second innings. Despite his efforts, India lost the match by a big
margin. In the second Test, R Ashwin proved too hot for England getting 8
wickets and helped India comeback with a resounding win.
It has been a remarkable journey for R Ashwin in Test
matches. He made his Test debut on 6th November 2011 in Delhi. Since
then, the off-spinner played a total of 77 Test matches (144 innings) and grabbed
401 wickets so far. His performances in Test matches have been exceptional especially
in Indian conditions with pitches helpful for spinners.
R Ashwin has taken a total of 29 five-wicket hauls and 7 ten-wicket hauls in Test matches. Despite his success in Indian conditions, he
struggled in overseas conditions, especially in SENA countries. In 2020/21
tour of Australia, R Ashwin performed brilliantly well helping India register
win in the 2nd Test match at Melbourne. He did not feature in the
fourth Test match at Gabba, Brisbane as he was ruled out due to injury.
The off-spinner became the second fastest to 400 Test
wickets. He achieved this feat in 77 Test matches as Muralitharan grabbed this
remarkable feat in 72 Test matches.
R Ashwin became the fourth Indian bowler after Anil Kumble,
Kapil Dev and Harbhajan Singh to achieve this amazing feat. Anil Kumble ended his
Test career with 619 wickets, Kapil Dev with 434 wickets, and Harbhajan Singh
with 417 wickets.
It has been a superb series for Ashwin in the ongoing Test
series so far. With one more Test remaining starting from 4th March,
the off-spinner would be looking to help India qualify for the ICC Test
Championship finals.
