This Day That Year: Australia made history in T20Is
It was an amazing game of cricket as Australia registered
the highest run chase in the T20I format. They achieved this feat during the Tri-series
game against New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland on 16th February 2018.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided
to bat first. It was a flying start by the Kiwis openers Martin Guptill and
Colin Munro blasting away the Australian bowlers to all parts of the ground. At
the end of the first six overs, New Zealand raced to 67 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Guptill and Munro made the
batting look easy putting Australian bowlers under immense pressure. Guptill
completed his half-century off 30 balls while Munro reached fifty off 27 balls.
Kiwis openers showed their class with big strokes on a great batting pitch. Australia
got their breakthrough dismissing Munro for 76 off 33 balls. The Kiwis openers
added 132 runs in 10.4 overs.
The Australian bowlers made a decent comeback with wickets
at regular intervals while Guptill looked in great reaching his century off 49
balls. Ross Taylor scored quickfire 17 off 6 balls helping Kiwis post a massive
total of 243 for 6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 244 runs to win, Australian captain Warner and Darcy
Short looked in sublime touch putting the Kiwis opening bowlers under pressure.
At the end of the first six overs, Australia scored 91 runs to lay a strong
foundation.
The Australian openers showed their positive intent and kept
the scoreboard ticking with aggressive hitting. Warner reached his century off
just 20 balls while Short blasted his fifty off 30 balls. Warner was dismissed
by Ish Sodhi as the openers put on 121 runs in just 8.3 overs.
Chris Lynn came to the crease and kept the momentum going. After
the dismissal of Lynn, Maxwell joined in the party with a quickfire 31 off 14
balls. Short and Maxwell added 56 runs for the 3rd wicket. Aaron
Finch coming in the middle order scored at a quick pace making sure that
Australia does not falter at any cost. Australia successfully chased down the
highest total in T20Is with 5 wickets remaining and 7 balls to spare.
Australia 245 for 5 in 18.5 overs (Darcy Short 76, Warner
59, Boult 1/42) beat New Zealand 243 for 6 in 20 overs ( Guptill 105, Munro 76,
Kane Richardson 2/40) by 5 wickets.
For his 76 off 33 balls, Darcy Short was named the man of
the match award.
