This Day That Year: Indian women’s team stun Australia in World T20
The Indian Cricket Team proved everybody wrong as they
stunned Australia in the opening match of the Women’s World T20 played at
Manuka Oval, Canberra on 21st February 2020.
Australian captain Meg Lanning won the toss and decided to
field first. The debutant Shafali Verma took the attack to Megan Schutt
smashing her for 16 runs putting the host's bowling line up under pressure.
Smriti Mandhana was dropped by Strano at midwicket. Verma looked in sublime
touch with aggressive hitting. After a decent start by the Indian openers, Mandhana
was dismissed trying to sweep and given LBW. The Indian openers added 41 runs
in just 4.1 overs to lay a strong foundation.
In the next over, Shafali Verma's innings came to an end providing
an easy catch to Perry. Jemimah Rodrigues was given out by the umpire but the decision overturned as the ball was missing leg stump. The Indian captain Harmanpreet
Kaur fell cheaply as the Women in Blue lost 3 quick wickets.
Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma steadied the Indian
innings taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries. It was a decent
partnership between these two batters as they added 53 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Deepti Sharma and Veda Krishnamurthy put on unbeaten 32 runs for the 4th
wicket. India ended the innings at 132 for 4 in 20 overs.
Chasing 133 runs to win, Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy
started off brightly hitting the bad balls away for boundaries. Shikha Pandey
provided the breakthrough dismissing Mooney with a good catch by Gayakwad.
Healy and Mooney added 32 runs for the opening wicket. The Indian spinners put
the Australian batters under immense pressure with consistent lines and
lengths.
Healy looked in great touch and completed his fifty off 34
balls. The leg-spinner Poonam Yadav was simply sensational wreaking havoc among
the Australian batters. Yadav dismissed well-set Healy, Haynes, and Perry in
quick succession to bring back India into the game. It was an amazing bowling
display by Poonam who got rid of Jonassen keeping the Australian team on the
backfoot. She ended with figures of 4 for 19 in 4 overs with 14 dot balls. The Indian team bowled out Australia for 115 to give them a historic 17 runs win.
Indian Women 132 for 4 in 20 overs (Deepti Sharma 49*,
Shafali Verma 29, Jonassen 2/24) beat Australian women 115 in 19.5 overs (
Healy 51, Gardner 34, Poonam Yadav 4/19, Gayakwad 3/14) by 17 runs.
For her match-winning spell of 4 for 19 in 4 overs, Poonam
Yadav was awarded the player of the match.
