India versus England 4th T20I: India beat England in a thriller to level the series

 

The Indian Cricket Team held their nerves to beat England in a thrilling 4th T20I match played at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Thursday.

England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and decided to field first. It was a flying start as Rohit Sharma smashed a six off the very first ball from Adil Rashid’s bowl. KL Rahul also played a cracking boundary to put pressure on England bowlers. Jofra Archer provided the breakthrough for England got the wicket of Rohit caught by himself. Surya Kumar Yadav coming at number 3 started his T20I career with a superb six off Archer’s bowling. It was a steady start for the Indian team as they posted 45 for 1 at the end of the six overs.

After the field restrictions, Surya Kumar looked in sublime touch putting the England bowlers under pressure. KL Rahul was dismissed trying to give room providing an easy catch to Archer at mid-off. Surya Kumar and Rahul added 42 runs for the 2nd wicket. India’s captain Virat Kohli was dismissed cheaply by Adil Rashid who came down the track and was stumped by Buttler. Rishabh Pant steadied the Indian innings along with Surya Kumar. Surya Kumar showed his intent right from the word go and completed his maiden T20I fifty off 28 balls. After smacking a six of Sam Curran, he tried to hit another big shot, but Malan took a good diving catch. The umpires gave the soft signal out and after lots of angles, he was given out. Surya and Pant added 40 runs for the 4th wicket.

Shreyas Iyer coming at number 6 started off with a boundary and showed his class with attacking strokes. Pant also hit some lovely boundaries to put England bowlers under immense pressure. Archer disturbed the timber of Pant ending 34 runs for the 5th wicket. Iyer was in sensational touch and smashed 18 runs off Jordan’s over in 18th over. A superb catch by Ben Stokes at mid-off ended the innings for Hardik Pandya. Iyer’s innings came to an end with an easy catch to Malan at deep square leg. Shardul Thakur also smacked a boundary off his first ball. It was a good batting performance as India posted 185 for 8 in 20 overs.

Chasing 186 runs to win, it was a slow start by Roy and Buttler scoring just 2 runs in the first 2 overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar got rid of Jos Buttler trying to hit a big shot giving a simple catch to KL Rahul. Jason Roy looked in sensational touch putting the Indian bowlers under pressure while Dawid Malan struggled to time the ball. At the end of the first six overs, England made 48 for 1.

The Indian bowlers depended on the slower ones and kept the England batsmen guessing. Roy took on Washington Sundar putting him under pressure. Rahul Chahar produced the big wicket dismissing Malan who tried to reverse sweep and was bowled. Malan and Roy added 45 runs for the 2nd wicket. Soon after, Pandya got rid of Roy providing an easy catch to Surya Kumar Yadav at deep midwicket to leave England in trouble at 66 for 3.

Ben Stokes struggled initially to time the ball along with Bairstow. Both Stokes and Bairstow took the advantage of the wet ball putting the Indian bowlers under pressure. Rahul Chahar grabbed an important wicket dismissing Bairstow coming down the track giving an easy catch to Sundar. Bairstow and Stokes added 65 runs for the 4th wicket.

Shardul Thakur bought India back into the game dismissing Stokes and Morgan off successive deliveries. In the next over, Hardik Pandya dismissed Sam Curran hitting the bat, pad, inside edge, and onto the stumps.

With 23 runs required off the final over, Jofra Archer hit a boundary and six before Thakur bowled 2 wide deliveries. Shardul Thakur took the wicket of Jordan providing an easy catch to Pandya at long-off and did not allow Archer to hit any runs off the final ball. India won the match by 8 runs to level the series.

India 185 for 8 in 20 overs (Surya Kumar 57, Iyer 37, Pant 30, Archer 4/33) beat England 177 for 8 in 20 overs ( Stokes 46, Roy 40, Thakur 3/42, Pandya 2/16) by 8 runs.

For his 57 off 31 balls, Surya Kumar Yadav was awarded the man of the match. India leveled the 5 matches T20I series at 2-2. The series finale will be played on 20th March.
