Indian women versus South African women 5th ODI: Dominate South Africa win the final ODI
The South African women’s team ended the ODI series on a
high beating India easily in the fifth and final match of the series played at
Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium, Lucknow on Wednesday.
South African captain Sune Luus won the toss and decided to
field first. Priya Punia played some lovely boundaries off Ismail and Kapp.
Kapp produced a stunning delivery to dismiss Punia to give the visitors the
breakthrough. Smriti Mandhana timed the ball brilliantly but did not find the gap.
At the end of the first 10 overs, India made 40 for the loss of 1 wicket.
The Indian team lost 2 quick wickets of Punam Raut who was
caught by a short fine leg while du Preez took a stunning catch to dismiss Smriti
Mandhana. Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur struggled to rotate the strike against
disciplined South African bowling. The experienced batters then took the attack
to visitors bowling before Kaur had to retire hurt after hitting a boundary
with the scoreboard reading 124 for 3 in the 31st over. Kaur and Raj
added 71 runs for the 4th wicket.
Indian middle-order did not show any resistance and wickets
fell from the other end. On the other hand, Raj looked composed reaching her fifty
off 78 balls. Raj showed her class with her stroke play and remained not out on
79. The South African women’s team bowled out India for a paltry total of 188
for 9. Harmanpreet Kaur did not come to bat.
Rajeshwari Gakywad struck twice early dismissing the
dangerous Laura Wolvaardt with a sharp catch by Rodrigues and then got rid of
Laura Goodall to leave South Africa in trouble at 3 for 2. Mignon du Preez and
Sune Luus hit some lovely boundaries putting pressure on the Indian bowlers. At
the end of the first 10 overs, South African women scored 27 for 2.
Hemalatha produced a peach to dismiss Luus leaving South
African team in trouble at 27 for 3. Du Preez and Anne Bosch steadied the
innings for the visitors keeping the scoreboard ticking with boundaries and
taking singles. Both South African batters respected good balls and made life tough
for the Indian team.
Gakywad was top class giving away zero runs in the first 3
overs. Du Preez remained composed and completed her fifty off 85 balls. Bosch also
completed her maiden ODI fifty off 67 balls. Prathyusha took her maiden wicket
dismissing Bosch as Raj took a good catch at midwicket. Bosch and du Preez
added 96 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Gakywad got rid of du Preez to give India some hopes of
winning the match. Kapp and de Klerk respected India’s best bowler. Kapp hit
some lovely boundaries of Goswami. The Indian fielding was not up to the mark
as Goswami dropped a simple chance to get rid of Klerk. Despite all the efforts,
Kapp and de Klerk ensured that the South African team won the match by 5 wickets
and 10 balls to spare. Kapp and de Klerk added unbeaten 58 runs for the 6th
wicket.
South African women 189 for 5 in 48.2 overs ( Bosch 58, du
Preez 57, Gakywad 3/13) beat Indian women 188 for 9 in 49.3 overs ( Raj 79*,
Kaur 30 Retried hurt, de Klerk 3/35, Sekhukhune 2/26) by 5 wickets.
For her match-winning knock of 58, Bosch was named the
player of the match. The South African women’s team dominated the ODI series
winning it by 4-1. India and South Africa will now feature in 3 matches T20I
series from 20th March.
