IPL 2021 Match 4: Punjab Kings beat Rajasthan Royals in a thriller
It was an amazing game of cricket as Punjab Kings held their
nerves to beat Rajasthan Royals in a high scoring thriller played at Wankhede
Stadium, Mumbai on Monday.
Rajasthan Royal's newly appointed captain Sanju Samson won
the toss and decided to field first. Mayank Agarwal started off brightly with
some cracking strokes but Sakaryia making his IPL debut got his wicket
providing an easy catch to Samson. Chris Gayle created enough pressure on the
RR bowler’s explosive hitting along with KL Rahul. At the end of the first six
overs, Punjab Kings made 46 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Gayle and KL Rahul put the
pressure back on Rajasthan Royals bowlers. The universe Boss, Gayle hit big
shots against Gopal and Tewaita. At the end of the first timeout, Punjab Kings
made 82 for 1.
A superb diving catch by Ben Stokes at long-on ended the innings
for Chris Gayle. Gayle and Rahul added 67 runs for the 2nd wicket.
Deepak Hooda kept on piling pressure hitting big sixes against Gopal and other
RR bowlers. On the other hand, KL Rahul was sublime and reached his fifty off
30 balls. Hooda kept on hitting boundaries at will to complete his half-century
off just 20 balls. Chris Morris dismissed the dangerous Hooda ending a 105 runs
partnership for the 3rd wicket. A sensational catch by Chetan
Sakaryia resulted in Nicolas Pooran’s wicket. KL Rahul showed his class and
kept on hitting shots before Tewaita took a great catch at the boundary. Jhye
Richardson was dismissed off the final ball as Punjab Kings posted 221 for 6 in
20 overs.
Chasing a massive total of 222 runs to win, it was not an
ideal start as Ben Stokes was caught and bowled by Mohammed Shami. Manan Vohra
played some lovely shots before Arshdeep Singh took a superb return catch. Sanju
Samson was given a reprieve as KL Rahul dropped a sitter. After the drop chance,
Jos Buttler and Sanju Samson showed their class by putting pressure on Punjab
Kings bowlers. At the end of the first six overs, Rajasthan Royals made 59 for
2 and the first timeout was called.
Jhye Richardson produced a cracking delivery to dismiss Jos
Buttler. Buttler and Samson added 45 runs for the 3rd wicket. Shivam
Dube was in good touch hitting some lovely boundaries while Samson continued his
aggressive intent reaching fifty off 33 balls. To smack a big shot, Dube was
caught by Deepak Hooda at long-off. Dube and Samson added 53 runs for the 4th
wicket. Riyan Parag and Samson put the King's bowlers under immense pressure.
Parag smacked M Ashwin for sixes to keep RR hopes alive. At the end of the
second timeout, RR scored 174 for 4.
After the timeout, Shami did the job for Punjab Kings
dismissing the dangerous Parag. Parag and Samson added 52 runs for the 5th
wicket. Samson showed his class to complete his 3rd IPL century off
54 balls. Riley Meredith bowled a superb 19th over giving away 8
runs and took the wicket of Rahul Tewaita.
With 13 runs required off the final over, Arshdeep Singh did
not allow Samson and Morris to score runs from the first 3 balls. Samson spanked a
six to make the equation 5 off 2 balls. The captain did not take a single and
was eventually dismissed off the last ball as Hooda took a good catch. Punjab
Kings held their nerves to win the match by just 4 runs.
Punjab Kings 221 for 6 overs (KL Rahul 91, Deepak Hooda 64,
Chetan Sakaryia 3/31) beat Rajasthan Royals 217 for 7 in 20 overs (Samson 119,
Buttler 25, Parag 25, Arshdeep Singh 3/35, Shami 2/33) by 4 runs.
