IPL 2021 Match 5: Bowlers lead Mumbai Indians victory
Mumbai Indians produced a stunning comeback to defeat
Kolkata Knight Riders in the 5th match of IPL 2021 played at M Chidadram
Stadium, Chennai on Tuesday.
Kolkata Knight Riders captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and
decided to field first. The decision paid off as Varun Chakravarthy bowling the
2nd over dismissed Quinton de Kock with a running catch by Rahul
Tripathi from long-on. Surya Kumar Yadav started off in aggressive style
hitting 3 boundaries off Harbhajan Singh’s over.
Shakib AL Hasan was bought into the attack in the 4th
over but Surya Kumar and Rohit Sharma remained steady. At the end of the first
six overs, Mumbai Indians made 42 for 1. After the field restrictions, Surya
Kumar showed his intent and kept on hitting runs. At the end of the first
timeout, Mumbai Indians scored 64 for 1.
After the timeout, Surya Kumar Yadav made the batting look
easy and completed fifty off 33 balls. Shakib AL Hasan provided much-needed
breakthrough for KKR dismissing the dangerous Surya Kumar who tried to smack a
big shot providing a simple catch to Shubman Gill at long-on. Surya and Rohit
added 76 runs for the 2nd wicket. In the next over, Ishan Kishan was
unfortunate as he pulled the shot straight into the hands of Krishna at fine leg.
KKR bowlers strangled Mumbai Indians batsmen with tight lines and lengths. At
the end of the 2nd timeout, Mumbai Indians scored 106 for 3.
Pat Cummins was bought into the attack and dismissed MI
captain Rohit Sharma taking the inside edge onto the stumps. KKR bowlers kept
on picking wickets at regular intervals making life tough for MI batsmen. Andre
Russell took 2 wickets in his first over getting rid of Kieron Pollard and
Macro Jansen to rattle the Mumbai Indians batting.
It was an amazing bowling stint by Russell who took wickets
of Krunal Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Rahul Chahar off the final ball to bowl
out Mumbai Indians for 152 in 20 overs. Russell registered his best figures
taking 5 for 15 in 2 overs.
Chasing the modest total of 153 runs to win, Nitish Rana
continued his superb form with attacking strokes while Shubman Gill gave him
good support. At the end of the first six overs, Kolkata Knight Riders 45 for 0
and ended the first timeout, KKR made 50 for 0.
After the timeout, Shubman Gill took the attack on Rahul
Chahar in his first over. Chahar dismissed Gill to end a strong 72 runs
partnership providing an easy catch at long-off to Kieron Pollard.
Nitish Rana looked composed with his stroke play and
maintained the momentum. Rahul Chahar struck again to get rid of Rahul Tripathi
that turned giving a simple catch to de Kock. Rana reached his fifty off 40
balls. Chahar made another important breakthrough dismissing Eoin Morgan and
then stumped Rana off his final ball.
Krunal Pandya bought into the attack dismissed the well-set
Nitish Rana giving some jitters to KKR camp. After the fall of Rana’s wicket,
the second timeout was called with the scoreboard reading 122 for 5.
It was a remarkable fightback by Mumbai Indians bowlers especially
Krunal Pandya giving just 3 runs in the 18th over. Bumrah backed it
up with another superb 19th over not allowing Russell and Dinesh
Karthik to hit big shots. Trent Boult dismissed Andre Russell and then Pat
Cummins with a superb yorker. Mumbai Indians held their nerves to win the match
by 10 runs.
For his 4 for 27 in 4 overs, Rahul Chahar was named the man of the match. RCB will take on SRH in tomorrow's match at Chennai.
