IPL 2021 Match 8: All-round CSK register a resounding win to open their account
After being humbled by Delhi Capitals in the first match,
Chennai Super Kings registered a resounding win against Punjab Kings played at Wankhede
Stadium, Mumbai on Friday.
Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni won the toss and
decided to field first. It was an ideal start as Deepak Chahar produced a
beauty to get rid of Mayank Agarwal in the very first over itself. A superb
direct throw by Ravindra Jadeja ended the innings for KL Rahul. Deepak Chahar
struck twice in one over by dismissing Universe Boss Chris Gayle and Nicolas
Pooran to leave Punjab Kings tottering at 19 for 4. At the end of the first six
overs, Punjab Kings made 26 for 4.
After the field restrictions, Deepak Chahar struck for the
fourth time getting rid of Deepak Hooda to leave Punjab Kings in tatters at 26
for 5. Jhye Richardson looked impressive with his technique while Sharukh Khan
created pressure on CSK bowlers. At the end of the first timeout, Punjab Kings
made 45 for 5.
Moeen Ali came into the attack and dismissed Jhye Richardson
with a beauty. Jhye Richardson and Sharukh Khan added 31 runs for the 6th
wicket. Sharukh showed his class by smacking some big hits while Murgun Ashwin
gave him good support. At the end of the second timeout, Punjab Kings scored 81
for 6. After the timeout, Dwyane Bravo dismissed Murgun Ashwin while Sharukh Khan's
impressive innings came to end in an attempt to hit big shots. It was a superb
bowling effort by CSK bowlers to restrict Punjab Kings at 106 for 8.
Chasing 107 runs to win, Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled with his
timing while du Plessis played with intent. Arshdeep Singh struck for Punjab
Kings dismissing Gaikwad providing an easy catch to Hooda at deep midwicket.
Meredith was superb with his line and lengths making life tough for CSK
batsmen. At the end of the six overs, CSK scored 32 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Du Plessis and Ali kept the
scoreboard ticking to end the first timeout at 53 for 1. Both experienced batsmen
put pressure on Punjab Kings bowlers taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries.
Murgun Ashwin finally struck dismissing Moeen Ali providing an easy catch to Sharukh
Khan at deep midwicket. Ali and Plessis added 66 runs for the 2nd
wicket.
Meredith bowled with pace and troubled CSK batsmen. Faf du
Plessis survived a caught behind call but Punjab Kings called for a review, the decision remained not as it did not hit anything. In the next over, Mohammed
Shami produced a snorter to get rid of Suresh Raina and then dismissed Ambati
Rayudu off the very next ball.
Sam Curran hit the winning with a boundary to help CSK register
six wickets win with 26 balls to spare. It was a good performance by MS Dhoni's
army who bowled brilliantly and restricted Punjab Kings for a modest total.
Despite some wobble, CSK won the match easily.
Chennai Super Kings 107 for 4 in 15.4 overs (Moeen Ali 46,
du Plessis 36*, Shami 2/21) beat Punjab Kings 106 for 8 in 20 overs (Sharukh
Khan 47, Deepak Chahar 4/13) by six wickets.
For his figures of 4 for 13 in 4 overs, Deepak Chahar was
named the man of the match award. With this win, CSK moved up to second
place in the points table. Sunrisers Hyderabad will take on Mumbai Indians in tomorrow’s
match.
