IPL 2021 Stats: Sanju Samson joins elite list of batsmen to hit 3 or more centuries.
The newly appointed Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson
played a breath-taking innings in their opening match of IPL 2021 against Punjab
Kings at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 12th April 2021.
Chasing down a massive target of 222 runs to win, Samson
came to the crease after the fall of Ben Stokes wicket. He was given a reprieve
early by KL Rahul and then blasted the Punjab Kings bowlers with amazing
strokes putting pressure on the opposition. Samson completed his fifty off
just 33 balls. As wickets fell from the other end, the stylish batsmen looked
in sublime touch hitting the ball brilliantly.
The equation became tough for Rajasthan Royals, but Samson
kept his composure and completed a century off 54 balls. Riyan Parag also smacked
some big shots keeping Rajasthan Royal's hopes alive of winning the match. With
13 runs required off the final over, Samson could not cross the line as he was
dismissed off the last ball. He made a sensational 119 off 63 balls with 12
fours and 7 sixes.
For his sensational knock, Sanju Samson was named the man of
the match award. He made his IPL debut in 2013. Since then, he has smashed 2
centuries in 2017 and 2019. His first century came for Delhi Daredevils against
Pune Supergiant in 2017 at MCA Stadium, Pune.
He scored the first century of the 2019 edition making a
breath-taking 102 off 55 balls for Rajasthan Royals against Sunrisers
Hyderabad. His knock was in vain as SRH chased down a big target with ease. Samson
has been a consistent performer in IPL and got a chance in the Indian Cricket
Team during the recently concluded T20I series against New Zealand in 2020 and
Australia in 2021.
Sanju Samson became the 2nd Indian batsmen to hit
3 or more centuries in the IPL. Virat Kohli enjoyed a memorable season as he
smacked 4 centuries during the 2016 edition.
Chris Gayle has scored most centuries with 6 playing for
Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings, Virat
Kohli with 5 for RCB, David Warner and Shane Watson with 4 centuries, while AB
de Villiers with 3 centuries.
