Bangladesh versus Sri Lanka 2nd ODI: Bangladesh thrash Sri Lanka to win the series
A superb knock by Rahim and disciplined bowling effort,
Bangladesh produced a dominating performance in the 2nd One-day
international played at Sher E Bangla Stadium, Dhaka on Tuesday. With this win,
Bangladesh moved top of the ICC Super League tournament.
Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal won the toss and decided to
bat again. Tamim got off to a cracking start with 3 boundaries in the first
over of Isuru Udana. Chameera dismissed the experienced Tamim Iqbal and Shakib
AL Hasan cheaply to leave Bangladesh in some trouble. Perera bought Hasaranga
into the attack early into the attack. Liton Das looked impressive with his
strokes along with Mushfiqur Rahim. At the end of the first 10 overs,
Bangladesh moved to 44 for 2.
Lakshan Sankdan was bought into the attack and dismissed
Liton Das in his first over. Das and Rahim added 34 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Soon after, Sandakan got rid of Mosadeek Hossain's caught down the leg to
leave Bangladesh in trouble at 74 for 4. Mushfiqur Rahim looked in decent touch
rotating the strike while Mahmudullah struggled initially. The experienced duo
of Mahmudullah and Rahim looked in decent touch taking on the Lankan bowlers.
Mahmudullah was severe against Dhananjaya hitting him for 2 sixes. On other
hand, Rahim looked composed and reached his fifty off 70 balls.
After the drinks break, the experienced duo kept on hitting
the gaps well and looking for a good total. A good catch by Kusal Perera ended
the innings for Mahmudullah. Mahmudullah and Rahim added 87 runs for the 5th
wicket. Sri Lanka bowlers kept on piling pressure on the Bangladeshi batsmen
taking wickets of Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz to leave hosts in trouble
at 184 for 7.
With the scoreboard reading 196 for 7, rain arrived. After
the initial phase of play, a heavy downpour came down. Mohammad Saifuddin was hit
on the head and eventually run out by Kusal Mendis. On the other hand, Rahim
completed a well-compiled century off 114 balls. Saifuddin and Rahim added 48
runs for the 8th wicket. Rahim took the charge playing some
attacking strokes while Shoriful Islam making his ODI debut was out for 0.
Rahim was eventually dismissed trying to increase the pace
of scoring as Bangladesh were bowled out for 246 in 48.1 overs. It was a superb
bowling performance by the Lankan bowlers keeping tight lines and lengths.
Chasing down 247 runs to win, Danushka Gunathilka and Kusal
Perera made a steady start. Taskin Ahmed became the first concussion substitute
in ODI cricket replacing Saifuddin. He bowled with pace and troubled Sri Lankan
openers. Bangladesh wicketkeeper decided not to review the decision for a
caught behind to get rid of Gunathilka as it hit the gloves.
The debutant Shoriful Islam got his maiden ODI wicket
getting Kusal Perera with a lovely catch by Tamim Iqbal at mid-on. Nissanka
came at number 3 and looked impressive. At the end of the first 10 overs, Sri
Lanka made 38 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Bangladeshi bowlers kept tight
lines and lengths not allowing the Sri Lankan batsmen to score runs easily.
Rahman got lucky as Gunathilka provided a simple catch to Shakib AL Hasan.
Shakib AL Hasan and Mehidy Hasan broke the backbone of the Sri Lankan batting
line-up. It was a disappointing batting performance as they kept losing wickets
at regular intervals. Hasaranga could not repeat his heroics from the 1st
match as he was bowled by Miraz.
Ashen Bandara struggled with his timing and was dismissed in an attempt to hit a big shot. With the scoreboard reading 126 for 9, rain arrived.
After the rain went away, the revised target was set to 245 in 40 overs.
Isuru Udana provided some entertainment with big hits but
Bangladesh won the match easily by 103 runs via the DLS method.
This was Bangladesh’s first bilateral series over Sri Lanka
across all formats. Thanks to a superb batting performance by Rahim, the hosts
posted a decent total and then defended the target with ease.
Bangladesh 246 in 48.1 overs (Rahim 125, Mahmudullah 41, Chameera
3/44, Sandakan 3/54) beat Sri Lanka 141 for 9 in 40 overs (Gunathilka 24,
Nissanka 20, Rahman 3/16, Miraz 3/28) by 103 runs via DLS method.
For his match-winning knock of 125, Mushfiqur Rahim was
named the man of the match award. Bangladesh sealed the 3 match ODI series 2-0
with one game to spare. The third and final ODI will be played on 28th
