Bangladesh versus Sri Lanka 3rd ODI: All-round Sri Lanka crush Bangladesh to register a consolation win
Thanks to a 120 by Kusal Perera and a brilliant bowling effort
by Chameera, Sri Lanka registered an emphatic 97 runs win in the 3rd
One-day international played at the Sher-E- Bangla Stadium, Mirpur on Friday.
Sri Lankan captain Kusal Perera won the toss and decided to
bat first. It was an ideal start for Lankan openers as Gunathilka and captain
Perera took the attack right from the word go and put the Bangladeshi bowler’s
pressure especially Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Both openers made use of good batting
conditions and hit boundaries off bad balls. At the end of the first 10 overs,
Sri Lanka raced away to 77 for 0.
After the field restrictions, Taskin Ahmed got the
breakthrough for Bangladesh getting rid of Gunathilka taking the inside edge
onto the stumps ending a strong 82 runs opening partnership. Taskin then got
rid of Nissanka to bring back Bangladesh into the game. After the hiccups,
Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera steadied the ship hitting bad balls for
boundaries. Perera completed his fifty off 44 balls to put Sri Lanka back on
track.
Taskin Ahmed coming into his second spell, got the
breakthrough for Bangladesh dismissing Kusal Mendis providing an easy catch to
Shakib AL Hasan. Mendis and Perera added 69 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Dhananjaya de Silva struggled with his timing not able to hit boundaries.
Bangladeshi fielding was not up to the mark as they dropped Kusal Perera
thrice. Dhananjaya was given out by the umpire and on review, it was changed to
not out due to the ball going over the stumps.
Kusal Perera looked steady and completed his sixth ODI
century off 99 balls. After the century, Perera maintained the momentum putting
the Lankan bowlers under pressure. A superb, judged catch by Mahmudullah
running back ended in the wicket of Kusal Perera. Perera and Dhanjaya added 65 runs
for the 4th wicket. Niroshan Dickwella playing his first ODI of the
series was run out while taking a single run. The Bangladeshi bowlers did not
allow Hasaranga and Dhananjaya to score runs quickly. Taskin Ahmed dismissed
Hasaranga to grab his fourth wicket being caught by Mehidy at long-on.
Ramesh Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva provided some
important runs in the final over off Shoriful Islam. During the course,
Dhananjaya completed his fifty off 68 balls to help Sri Lanka post 286 for 6 in
50 overs.
Chasing 287 runs to win, it was not an ideal start for the
hosts as Chameera got 2 quick wickets of Naim Islam and Shakib AL Hasan to
leave Bangladesh in trouble at 9 for 2. Tamim Iqbal and Rahim could not take
charge as Sri Lankan bowlers kept the pressure on the experienced pair.
Chameera struck for the third time getting the wicket of Tamim in a controversial
manner. The umpire gave it out but on replay, it did not hit the bat, the decision
stayed it out. At the end of the first 10 overs, Bangladesh made 29 for 3.
After the field restrictions, the inform Rahim was not able
to score runs quickly while Mosadeek showed some positive intent. It was a
disciplined bowling effort by Sri Lankan bowlers keeping the pressure on
Bangladeshi batsmen. Ramesh Mendis got his maiden ODI wicket getting rid of
inform Rahim. Rahim and Mosadeek added 56 runs for the 4th wicket.
Mosadeek looked impressive with his strokes and kept the
scoreboard ticking along with Mahmudullah. Mosadeek completed a half-century off
69 balls. Ramesh Mendis struck again to dismiss well-set Mosadeek. Mosadeek and
Mahmudullah added 41 runs for the 5th wicket. Chameera produced a
magical spell for Sri Lanka getting wickets of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taskin
Ahmed to pick his first five-wicket haul in ODIs. Hasaranga dismissed Afif
ending 33 runs partnership for the 6th wicket.
Mahmudullah survived two close shouts due to umpires' calls
and lost their reviews. Hasaranga produced a magical delivery to dismiss Shoriful
Islam. Mahmudullah reached his fifty off 62 balls. Binura Fernando got his
maiden ODI wicket getting the wicket of Mahmudullah to bowl out Bangladesh for
189 to give Sri Lanka a consolation 97 runs win.
Bangladesh won the 3 match ODI series by 2-1. For his 1 century and 1 half-century, Mushfiqur Rahim was named man of the series.
Sri Lanka 286 for 6 in 50 overs ( Kusal Perera 120, Dhananjaya
55*, Taskin Ahmed 4/46) beat Bangladesh 189 in 42.3 overs ( Mahmudullah 53, Mosadeek
