Journey of Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2021
It was a great season so far for Virat Kohli led Royal
Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2021. With the new recruits like Maxwell, Jamieson,
Harshal Patel, they performed brilliantly with some top-quality performances
leading to such good performances.
Royal Challengers Bangalore started the season defeating
Mumbai Indians in a last-ball thriller at M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 9th
April. RCB captain Virat Kohli decided to bowl first after winning the toss. Despite
losing Rohit Sharma early in the piece, Chris Lynn and Surya Kumar Yadav put on
70 runs for the 2nd wicket looking good for a big total. Jamieson
struck for RCB getting rid of Surya Kumar. Harshal who was traded from Delhi
Capitals created a major impact with amazing figures of 5 for 27 in 4 overs
including 3 wickets in the final over. RCB restricted Mumbai Indians to 159 for
9.
Chasing 160 runs to win, RCB lost the wickets of Washington
Sundar and Rajat Patidar cheaply. Virat Kohli and Maxwell steadied the innings
putting on 52 runs for the 3rd wicket. Despite the fall of quick
wickets, AB de Villiers was simply superb with his timing scoring 48 off 27
balls. Harshal Patel hit the winning runs helping RCB register a 2-wicket win.
For his 5 for 27 in 4 overs, Harshal was named the man of the match award.
Thanks to a superb batting effort by Maxwell and bowling
effort, RCB register a closely fought win over Sunrisers Hyderabad played at M Chidadram
Stadium, Chennai on 14th April. After being invited into bat by
Warner, RCB batsmen struggled to time the ball as wickets fell from another end.
Kohli and Maxwell added 44 runs for the 3rd wicket. RCB lost wickets
at regular intervals but Maxwell knock of 59 off 41 balls helped them to post
149 for 8 in 20 overs.
After Mohammed Siraj picked the early wicket of Saha, Warner and
Bairstow looked in complete control putting on 83 runs before Jamieson
dismissed the dangerous Warner. After the timeout, Shahbaz Ahmed got wickets of
Bairstow, Pandey, and Samad in one over to change the course of the game. Despite
Rashid Khan’s effort, RCB won the match by 6 runs.
RCB continued their good form as they crush Kolkata Knight
Riders by a massive margin. RCB captain Kohli and Patidar went cheaply. Maxwell came
to the crease and put KKR bowlers under pressure. On the other hand, Paddikal
struggled with his timing. Paddikal and Maxwell added 86 runs for the 3rd
wicket. Thanks to a brilliant 78 off 49 balls by Maxwell and unbeaten 76 off 34
balls helped RCB post a massive total of 204 for 4.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore did not allow KKR batsmen to
score runs easily. Despite Russell’s hitting, RCB won the match by 38 runs to
register their third successive win.
Thanks to a brilliant opening partnership between Paddikal
and Kohli, RCB registered an emphatic 10 wicket win over Rajasthan Royals
played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on 22nd April. RCB captain Kohli decided
to bowl first after winning the toss. A superb opening spell by Siraj and Jameison
left RR in trouble at 18 for 3. Despite 66 runs partnership between Dube and
Riyan Parag, RR could only score 177 for 9 in 20 overs.
Devdutt Paddikal looked in sensational touch right from the
word go keeping the momentum while Kohli gave the second fiddle. Paddikal
remained not out on 101 while Kohli not out on 72 to register a thumping 10
wicket win with 21 balls to spare. For his 101 not out, Paddikal was named the
man of the match.
RCB could not cope up with the pressure as they lost to
Chennai Super Kings by a massive margin. CSK captain Dhoni won the toss and
batted first. Chahal got the breakthrough for RCB ending 74 runs opening
partnership.
Harshal Patel proved his worth again taking 3 wickets of du
Plessis, Raina, and Rayudu. Harshal
Patel went to the cleaners as Jadeja smashed 37 runs in the last over helping
CSK post 191 for 4. Despite a quickfire start by Paddikal and Kohli, RCB lost
wickets at regular intervals to be restricted at 122 for 9.
Despite Shimron Hetymer and Pant’s brilliance, Royal
Challengers Bangalore defeated Delhi Capitals by just 1 run at the Narendra
Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on 27th April. After being invited into bat,
RCB lost two early wickets of Paddikal and Kohli providing a decent start. AB
de Villiers played a special inning remaining not out on 75 off 42 balls to
help RCB post 171 for 5. De Villiers smacked 23 runs off Stoinis in the final
over.
RCB bowlers kept a tight line and lengths not allowing DC
openers to get off to a quick start. Siraj, Chahal, and Jamieson took 1 wicket
each. Hetymer and Pant showed their class keeping the hopes alive for DC.
Mohammed Siraj bowled a brilliant last over with two boundaries by Pant off the
last 2 balls to help RCB register a thrilling win.
Before the tournament got postponed, RCB lost to Punjab
Kings by a big margin. Kohli won the toss and decided to field first. Gayle and
KL Rahul put RCB bowlers under pressure putting on 80 runs for the 2nd
wicket. RCB bowlers came back strongly to take 4 quick wickets to leave Punjab
Kings in trouble at 118 for 5. Harshal Patel was taken for 22 runs in the final
over by KL Rahul and Brar as Punjab Kings posted 179 for 5.
It was a disappointing batting performance by RCB batsmen as
they could only post 145 for 8 in 20 overs. Virat Kohli struggled to score runs
quickly with 35 off 31 balls, Patidar made 31 off 30 balls, and Harshal Patel
with a quickfire 31 off 13 balls. RCB ended the halfway stage with 10 points but due to less net run-rate, they slipped down to 3rd.
Harshal Patel finished as the leading wicket-taker with 17
wickets from 7 matches ( 7 innings) with best figures of 5 for 27. Glenn
Maxwell proved his worth being the leading runs scorer for RCB with 223 runs
from 7 matches (6 innings). He scored 2 half-centuries with the best score of 78 against
KKR.
