England versus New Zealand 2nd Test 2nd Day: Will Young and Conway puts New Zealand in a strong position
Thanks to a superb batting performance, New Zealand ended
the 2nd day of the 2nd Test match in a strong position played
at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Friday.
Starting on the overnight score of 258 for 7, Mark Wood
looked in cracking form right from the word go putting pressure on Boult and
Henry with 5 boundaries. Boult and Henry tried with short balls as Wood kept
hitting shots. Henry got the reward dismissing Wood taking the inside edge onto
the stumps. Wood and Lawrence added 66 runs for the 8th wicket.
Stuart Broad did provide any resistance to being dismissed by Boult providing easy
catch to Blundell.
Dan Lawrence did most of the scoring for England. James
Anderson looked comfortable against the Kiwis pacers. Anderson was eventually
dismissed LBW as Latham took a review. The umpire gave it not out and crashing
onto the stumps to be bowled out for 303. Lawrence remained not out on 81.
Stuart Broad bowled a dream spell initially making the ball
talk. Broad got the breakthrough getting rid of Latham. Devon Conway continued
from where he left in the first match. He was brilliantly caught by Zak Crawley,
but umpires decided to go upstairs. The soft signal was not out and on evidence, the decision was upheld with Broad and England players upset. Will Young looked
composed with his defense. At the end of the first session, New Zealand made 43
for 1.
After the lunch break, Conway and Will Young thwarted the
England pacers. Conway remained solid to complete his fifty off 85 balls. Joe
Root decided to bring himself on to keep England pacers fresh. Will Young was
given a reprieve as Root dropped chance. Conway and Young kept the
scoreboard against Root. Stuart Broad troubled with the changed ball against
Conway. Both Conway and Young ensured that New Zealand went into the tea break
at 130 for 1.
Stuart Broad got the breakthrough early in 3rd
session getting rid of Conway with a short ball trap giving a simple catch to Crawley.
Conway and Young added 122 runs for the 2nd wicket. James Anderson
and Stuart Broad provided a superb spell of bowling troubling Taylor and Young.
Young looked composed reaching his maiden fifty off 132 balls.
Ross Taylor was given out by the umpire and on review, it was
overturned to not out due to the ball missing the leg stump. Will Young and Taylor
looked in great touch keeping the scoreboard ticking making life tough for the
hosts. Root decided to bring the part-time bowlers of Lawrence into the attack but
could not do anything. The part-time spinner Lawrence bought some cheer for
England dismissing Young taking inside edge to Pope. Young and Taylor added 92 runs to put hosts under pressure.
Thanks to a superb batting effort by Young, Conway, and Taylor, New Zealand ended the 2nd day in a strong position. With the 2nd new ball available, the England bowlers would be looking to make inroads and put visitors under pressure.
New Zealand 229 for 3 in 76.3 overs (Will Young 82, Conway 80,
Broad 2/22) trail England 303 in 101 overs (Lawrence 81*, Burns 81, Boult 4/85,
Henry 3/78) by 74 runs.
