England versus New Zealand 2nd Test 3rd Day: Bowlers puts Kiwis in a strong position

 

It was a superb day for the New Zealand team as they put the hosts under pressure on the 3rd day of the 2nd Test played at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Saturday.

Starting on the overnight score of 229 for 3, Ross Taylor started off aggressively reaching his fifty from 112 balls. The England captain Joe Root decided to take the 2nd new ball immediately. Ross Taylor kept on playing shots putting the hosts under pressure. Ollie Pope could not cling a tough chance to provide England breakthrough. On the other hand, Henry Nicholls remained solid with his defense. Both Taylor and Nicholls took New Zealand to a strong position at the first hour.

Olly Stone got the breakthrough for England soon after the drinks break getting rid of Taylor providing an easy catch to Bracey. Taylor and Nicholls added 63 runs for the 4th wicket. Tom Blundell was dropped off his first ball by Bracey diving to his right but could not cling on to it. Mark Wood bowled with pace and strangled Henry Nicholls down the leg as Bracey took a good catch. New Zealand went into the lunch break at 326 for 5.

It was an ideal start for the England team in the second session as Olly Stone dismissed Mitchell providing an easy catch to Crawley. Anderson then got the wicket of Neil Wagner with a good delivery allowing England comeback into the match. Matt Henry survived a close LBW shout, but the decision was upheld.  Mark Wood got rid of Henry to leave New Zealand in some trouble.

A good catch by Joe Root ended the innings for Tom Blundell. Ajaz Patel and Trent Boult enjoyed themselves with quickfire runs putting on 27 runs before Patel was LBW via review. The umpire gave it not out and the decision was overturned. New Zealand posted 388 runs in the first innings with 85 runs lead.

It was a perfect start for Kiwis as Matt Henry got rid of Rory Burns with a lovely catch by Tom Latham. Henry then dismissed Dom Sibley to leave England in big trouble. At the end of the second session, England ended at 18 for 2.

The third session saw the Kiwis bowlers showing disciplined bowling making life tough for England. Henry got his third wicket getting rid of Zak Crawley with a peach. Joe Root was made to struggle by the Kiwis pacers especially Henry, Boult. Ollie Pope was lucky enough to hit boundaries before Neil Wagner produced a superb delivery to get rid of him via review by the batsmen. The umpire gave it out and the decision was upheld as it out as umpires call.

Neil Wagner produced another superb delivery to dismiss Dan Lawrence leaving England in tatters at 58 for 5. England captain Joe Root hit his first boundary. Ajaz Patel provided great control for Latham getting rid of Bracey and Root to make life miserable for the hosts.

Mark Wood provided some entertainment for the crowd with positive strokes against the pacers and Patel. On the other hand, Stone remained solid keeping the Kiwi bowlers out. Wagner struck again for New Zealand getting rid of Wood for a quickfire 29. Wood and Stone added 44 runs for the 8th wicket. Trent Boult then rattled Stuart Broad with stunning delivery. England ended 3rd day at 122 for 9 with a lead of just 37 runs.

England 303 in 101 overs (Lawrence 81*, Burns 81, Boult 4/85, Henry 3/78) and 122 for 9 in 41 overs (Mark Wood 29, Pope 23, Wagner 3/18, Henry 3/36) lead New Zealand 388 in 119.1 overs (Ross Taylor 80, Will Young 82, Conway 80, Broad 4/48, Olly Stone 2/92) by 37 runs.
