Euro 2020 Quarterfinals line-up decided
The Euro 2020 Round of 16 matches saw some brilliant action
with top teams like Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, France, and Sweden being knocked
out. Teams like Ukraine, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Denmark showed great fighting
spirit to reach the quarterfinals stage.
After losing the first two matches against Finland and Belgium,
Denmark proved their worth defeating Russia by 4-1 to book a place in the round
of 16 against Wales. It was a dominating performance by Danish side who
outplayed Wales played on 26th June at Johan Cruyff Arena, Amsterdam.
Denmark dominated the possession before Dolberg scored a
brilliant goal in the 27th minute to give them a 1-0 lead. Both
teams played attacking football but could not convert anything. Denmark went
into the half-time break at 1-0. Dolberg made a great move to score his 2nd
goal in the 48th minute giving Denmark a 2-0 lead. Denmark continued
their domination over Wales as Mahele made it 3-0 in the 88th minute
and Braithwaite made it 4-0 in additional time to give Denmark a resounding 4-0
win to move into the quarterfinals.
In the second match of the day, table toppers Italy held
their nerves to defeat Austria by 2-1 in extra time at Wembley Stadium, London.
The Italian team dominated the possession but could not penetrate the Austrian
defense and the match was 0-0 at full time.
Chiesa scored a sensational goal in the 95th
minute to give Italy a well-deserved 1-0 lead. At the stroke of half-time,
Pessina made it 2-0. Kalajdzic scored a goal for Austria in the 114th
minute but it was not enough as Italy won the match by 2-1 thanks to superb
goals.
The biggest shock of the tournament was when the Czech Republic
stunned the Netherlands in the 3rd round of 16 matches played at Puskas
Arena, Budapest on 27th June. After a goalless first half,
Netherlands player was handed a red card. Holes scored a superb goal to give the Czech Republic 1-0 and then Schick made it 2-0 proving their worth. Czech
Republic finished 2nd best 3rd team and progressed into
the round of 16.
The World number 1 Belgium knocked out defending Champions Portugal.
Hazard goal was the difference as showed his class in the 42nd
minute. Portugal tried their best, but Belgium held their nerves to move into
the quarterfinals.
Spain and Croatia were involved in a high-scoring thriller
played at Parken Stadium, Copenhagen on 28th June. Spain goalkeeper
Pedri scored a own goal to give Croatia a 1-0 lead. Sarabia, Azpillpecuta and
Torres made it 3-1 in favor of Spain. Orsic and Pasaclic led Croatia to a comeback to level the scores at 3-3 resulting in extra time. Morata and Oyarzabal scored two
goals in extra time giving Spain a thrilling 5-3 win to move into the
quarterfinals.
Switzerland stunned France in a
thriller played at Arena Nationla, Bucharest on 28th June. Sefervoic
scored a brilliant header goal to give the Swiss 1-0 lead. Swiss missed a penalty
shot as the France goalkeeper saved. Switzerland went into the half-time at 1-0.
Karim Benzema scored two brilliant goals in the 57th
and 59th minute to give France a 2-1 lead. Pogba scored a stunning shot
from outside to give France a 3-1 lead. Seferfovic scored a brilliant header goal
in the 81st minute while Gavaronic showed great composure to lead
equalizer for Switzerland. The match went into extra time. There was nothing to
separate in the extra time, but nobody scored.
In the penalty shootout, Switzerland scored all 5 goals each
before Sommer saved a brilliant shot from Pogba to give Switzerland a 5-4 win shootout.
In the last two rounds of 16 matches played on 29th
June, England defeated Germany by 2-0 while Ukraine reached the last 8 stages of
a major tournament for the first time.
England dominated the play right from the word go. Sterling
scored a brilliant goal from assist in the 75th minute. Thomas
Muller missed an open chance to level the scores for Germany. Harry Kane made
it 2-0 with a brilliant goal.
Ukraine stunned Sweden in the final round of 16 matches
played at Hampden Park, Glasgow. Zinchenko showed his class converting into a
goal in the 27th minute to give Ukraine a 1-0 lead. Forsberg provided
a stunning goal right before the half-time level the scores at 1-1. Both teams
tried to give their best in the 2nd half, but the match went into extra time.
Dovbyk stunned the Sweden goalkeeper to give Ukraine 2-1
lead and thus qualify into the quarterfinals.
