Indian women versus England women 1st ODI: England women thrash India
The England women produced a dominating display in the 1st
One-day international match against India played at County Ground, Bristol on
Sunday.
England women captain Heather Knight won the toss and
decided to field first. The debutant Shafali Verma showed great intent putting
Brunt and Shurbsole with boundaries. To hit another big shot, Verma provided a
simple catch to Shurbsole. Smriti Mandhana and Punam Raut failed to rotate the
strike. After the sustained pressure by England bowlers, Shurbsole produced a
superb delivery getting rid of Mandhana. At the end of the first 10 overs, Indian
women ended at 27 for 2.
After the field restrictions, Raut and Mithali Raj could not
hit boundaries as England bowlers kept on the pressure. Raut was given out by
the umpire and on review, it was overturned due to the ball missing the leg stump.
Raut played some lovely shots but there were a lot of dot balls consumed by the
experienced duo. Kate Cross got the wicket of Raut who tried to smash a big
shot being caught by Ecclestone at mid-off. Raut and Mithali Raj added 56 runs
for the 3rd wicket. Ecclestone struck early to dismiss dangerous
Harmanpreet Kaur to leave Indian women in trouble at 84 for 4.
Deepti Sharma and Mithali Raj kept on consuming dots balls.
After the initial struggle, Sharma and Raj showed some intent in hitting
boundaries. Shurbsole made another important breakthrough getting the wicket of
Deepti Sharma trapped in front of the wicket. Deepti Sharma and Raj added 65
runs for the 5th wicket. Raj upped the ante and completed her fifty
off 95 balls. Vastrakar also played some attacking strokes. Ecclestone provided
another important breakthrough getting the wicket of Raj for a well-made 72. Raj
and Vastrakar added 31 runs for the 6th wicket. Vastrakar was
trapped in front trying to hit a reverse sweep. A superb stumping by Amy Jones
ended the innings for Taniya Bhatia.
Shikha Pandey and Jhulan Goswami ensured that Indian women
cross 200. Indian women ended their innings at 201 for 8 in 50 overs.
In reply to 202 runs to win, Tammy Beaumont and Laura
Winfield provided an aggressive start putting pressure on the Indian bowlers.
Goswami got rid of Winfield to give Indian some hope. Beaumont played with
intent and kept the pressure hitting boundaries at will. At the end of the
first 10 overs, England women raced away to 61 for 1.
After the field restrictions, Knight joined in with Beaumont
and kept the scoreboard ticking. Ekta Bisht produced a beauty to dismiss
Heather Knight ending 59 runs 2nd wicket partnership. Nat Sciver
looked in cracking touch hitting boundaries at will.
Beaumont kept the momentum going on and reached her fifty
off 48 balls. Nat Sciver showed her class making life tough for visitors. Both experienced
batters rotated the strike and hit boundaries easily to keep the momentum going.
Sciver upped the ante reaching fifty off 60 balls. Sciver smacked the first six
off the match and ended it with a six to give England women a dominating 8
wicket win with 91 balls to spare. Sciver and Beaumont added unbeaten 119 runs
in 19 overs.
England women 202 for 2 in 34.5 overs (Beaumont 87*, Sciver
74*, Goswami 1/25) beat Indian women 201 for 8 in 50 overs (Mithali Raj 72,
Raut 32, Ecclestone 3/40, Brunt 2/35) by 8 wickets.
For her unbeaten 87 off 87 balls, Tammy Beaumont was awarded
the player of the match. England women take 1-0 lead. The 2nd ODI will be played on 28th June at Taunton.
