Indian women versus England women one-off Test Day 2: England ends the day in a commanding position
Thanks to an all-round effort, England ended the 2nd
day in a strong position against India played at County Ground, Bristol on
Thursday.
Jhulan Goswami struck early for India dismissing Katherine
Brunt with a review for LBW. The umpire gave it not out and the decision was
overturned as it was hitting the middle stump. Sophia Dunkley and Ecclestone
played the Indian spinners brilliantly keeping the scoreboard ticking. India also
took a review for LBW that was upheld due to the ball missing the stumps.
Ecclestone survived an LBW shout given out and on review, it was overturned due
to the ball missing the leg stump. Soon after, Ecclestone provided a simple catch
to Shikha Pandey at mid-on. Ecclestone and Dunkley added 56 runs for the 8th
wicket.
Dunkley was also given out by the umpire and this decision
was overturned due to the ball missing the leg stump. Soon after, the debutant reached
her maiden Test fifty off 97 balls. Any Shurbsole looked in brilliant touch
hitting boundaries keeping the momentum going on. England women ended the first
session in a strong position at 357 for 8.
Shurbsole started off brightly hitting boundaries at will
and put Indian bowlers under immense pressure with her strokes while Dunkley
gave most of the strike to Shurbsole. Shurbsole entertaining innings came to
end trying to hit a big stroke and was bowled by Rana. Shurbsole and Dunkley
added 70 runs for the 9th wicket. With this wicket, England women
declared their innings on 396 for 9.
In reply, the Indian women openers Smriti Mandhana and
debutant Shafali Verma made a steady start putting bad balls away for boundaries.
Shafali took the attack to England bowlers and kept the pressure. Both batters
looked comfortable making life tough for the opposition. The Indian openers
showed great courage ending the 2nd session at 63 for 0.
Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana started the third session
on an aggressive note taking the attacking to England bowlers. Verma reached
her maiden Test fifty off 83 balls. Mandhana struggled against Ecclestone but
maintained her composure completing her fifty too off 93 balls. The Indian openers
kept the scoreboard ticking taking singles and hitting boundaries with ease.
Verma brilliant innings came to an end as she spooned a simple catch to
Shurbsole for a superb 96. Mandhana and Verma put on 167 runs opening stand.
England captain Heather Knight did not allow the Indian
batters to score runs easily especially Punam Raut. Smriti Mandhana played a
rash stroke and lost her wicket giving an easy catch to Shurbsole. Shikha Pandey
was promoted but provided gave a simple return catch to Heather Knight.
The Indian captain Mithali Raj was dismissed cheaply via
review. The umpire gave it not out and the decision was overturned as hit the
inside edge to short leg. Heather Knight struck again to get rid of Punam Raut
who padded off a straight ball.
I Harmanpreet Kaur was given out by
the umpire and the decision was overturned to not out taking the inside edge. India
collapsed from a strong position to 187 for 5.
India 187 for 5 in 60 overs ( Shafali Verma 96, Mandhana 78,
Heather 2/5, Sciver 1/21) trail England 396 for 9 d in 121.2 overs ( Knight 95,
Beaumont 66, Dunkley 74*, Shurbsole 47, Rana 4/131, Deepti Sharma 3/65) by 209
runs.
