Indian women versus England women one-off Test 4th Day: Lower order fightback helps India to a impossible draw
Thanks to a superb effort by Sneha Rana, Shikha Pandey and
Taniya Bhatia, India pulled out a remarkable draw on the fourth and final day
of the one-off Test match played at County Ground, Bristol on Saturday.
Starting on the final day at 83 for 1, Shafali Verma looked
confident and hit Ecclestone for a straight six. A superb catch by Katherine
Brunt from a full delivery resulted in the wicket of Verma. Verma and Deepti
Sharma added 70 runs for the 2nd wicket. Punam Raut showed some
intent hitting boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking. Deepti Sharma
defended brilliantly and hit the bad balls away for boundaries. Both Indian
batters looked comfortable keeping the momentum going. Deepti Sharma reached
her fifty off 157 balls. At the stroke of lunch break, Deepti Sharma tried to
slog hitting the inside edge onto the stumps. Deepti Sharma and Punam Raut
added 72 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Indian women ended at 171 for 3 with a slender lead of 6 runs.
Soon after the lunch break, Nat Sciver struck early getting
rid of Indian captain Mithali Raj. Ecclestone dismissed Punam Raut to leave
Indian women in tatters. Pooja Vastrakar was promoted ahead of Kaur and hit
some lovely boundaries before Knight dismissed her. Kaur could not contribute
anything to leave Indian women in big trouble at 199 for 7.
The England captain Heather Knight took the 2nd
new ball but Sneha Rana and Shikha Pandey remained solid with their defense.
Rana hit bad balls away for boundaries making life tough for the opposition.
Sciver struck for England getting the wicket of Pandey with a down leg tickle
to Amy Jones. Pandey and Rana added 41 runs for the 8th wicket.
Indian women ended the 2nd session at 243 for 8 with a lead of 78
runs.
Sneha Rana and Taniya Bhatia started the final session on a
good note respecting the England bowlers. Both Indian batters frustrated England
bowlers making sure that India reaches safety. Rana completed her maiden
Test fifty off 91 balls. Bhatia and Rana continued to milk the bowlers
brilliantly ensuring that India pulled a remarkable draw. The England captain
Heather Knight decided to call off play. Indian women ended the final day at 344
for 8 as Bhatia and Rana put on unbeaten 104 runs for the 9th
wicket.
With this remarkable draw, India and England earned 2 points
each in the multi-format tournament. For her brilliant 96 and 63 in her debut
Test match, Shafali Verma was named the man of the match. Now the action shifts
to 3 ODIs from 27th June
