WTC finals Day 5: Honours even at the end of day 5
The fifth day’s play saw some exciting action as both teams
fought for each run played at Ageas Bowl, Southampton on Tuesday.
Starting on the overnight score of 101 for 2, it was a
remarkable bowling performance by the Indian pacers including Bumrah and Ishant
Sharma. Mohammed Shami came into the bowling and troubled the experienced duo
of Taylor and Williamson. After the first drinks break, a superb catch by
Shubman Gill resulted in the wicket of Taylor. The Indian pace trio just kept
on bowling nagging lines and lengths putting Kiwi’s batsmen under immense
pressure.
Ishant Sharma struck the 2nd blow for India
getting rid of Henry Nicholls as Rohit Sharma took a good catch. Shami produced
a peach to dismiss BJ Watling to leave New Zealand in trouble at 135 for 5.
Williamson looked cautious against top-quality Indian bowling. At the end of
the first session, New Zealand ended at 135 for 5.
The second session started Colin de Grandhomme hitting the
first ball for a boundary. Kohli decided to take the 2nd new ball
after 80th over. Shami struck India getting rid of de Grandhomme
with beauty. De Grandhomme and Williamson added 27 runs for the 7th
wicket. Kyle Jamieson provided the long handle putting the Indian bowlers under
pressure. Williamson showed tremendous skills hitting boundaries off bad balls.
Shami produced a bouncer to dismiss Jamieson to end a 30 runs partnership for
the 8th wicket.
Tim Southee kept the attack against the Indian bowlers along
with Williamson and helped New Zealand go past India’s score. Ishant Sharma got the big wicket of Williamson as Kohli took a good catch. Ashwin dismissed Neil
Wagner for 0 runs as Rahane grabbed rebound catch at slips. Tim Southee smashed
few vital runs hitting some shots before being dismissed by Jadeja. India
bowled out New Zealand for 249 with a lead of 32 runs. With that wicket, the
umpires called it tea.
Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma began off steadily in the
second innings. Rohit smacked the first boundary with a lovely cut shot.
Southee struck for New Zealand dismissing Gill with good delivery. Pujara and
Rohit Sharma remained steady before Southee got the wicket of Rohit Sharma.
Kyle Jamieson troubled Virat Kohli before both Pujara and Kohli took India to
64 for 2.
India 217 ( Rahane 49, Kohli 44, Jamieson 5/31)and 64 for 2 in 30 overs (Rohit Sharma 30, Southee 2/17) lead New Zealand 249 in 99.2 overs ( Conway 54, Williamson 49, Shami 4/76, Ishant Sharma 3/48) by 32 runs.
