WTC finals India versus NZ 2nd Day: Honours even at the end of day 2

After the first day washout, both teams fought it out on a rain-curtailed 2nd day as Indian openers started steadily before Kiwi’s bowlers made a comeback played at Ageas Bowl, Southampton on Saturday.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to field first with conditions helping the pacers. Rohit Sharma started off brightly with 3 runs off Tim Southee’s bowling. The Indian openers played according to the merit of the ball and played some lovely shots. Gill and Rohit Sharma survived testing conditions against Southee and Boult. The Kiwis captain decided to bring Kyle Jamieson after 5 overs spell by the opening bowlers.

The Indian openers hit the bad balls away for boundaries keeping the scoreboard ticking. Colin de Grandhomme also was bought in by Williamson. Jamieson extracted bounce but the Indian openers remained solid. After a solid start, Jamieson struck to get rid of Rohit Sharma with a lovely catch by Tim Southee at third slips ending 62 runs opening stand. Neil Wagner struck in his first over dismissing Gill with a beauty to bring Kiwis into the game. Kohli started off the innings with a superb cover drive. India ended the first session at 69 for 2.

It was a testing time for Virat Kohli and Pujara in the second session as Wagner and de Grandhomme bowled nagging lines and lengths. Pujara hit 2 boundaries in 3 balls to gain momentum for the Indian team. Kohli left the ball with precision and remained solid enough.

Trent Boult got the big wicket of Pujara with an in-swinging delivery hitting the stumps to leave India in trouble at 88 for 3. Ajiyanka Rahane looked confident and played attacking strokes against top-quality pace bowling of New Zealand. The experienced duo kept the Kiwis attack at bay. With bad light stopping play, the umpires called early tea at 120 for 3.

After a short delay due to bad light, Tim Southee troubled the Indian batsmen especially Rahane with beauties. With the scoreboard reading 134 for 3, bad light again took place. After a little break, play started again and both Indian batsmen looked comfortable before there was a problem with light. Due to weather, the play did not start, and umpires decided to call stumps.

India 146 for 3 in 64.4 overs ( Kohli 44*, Rohit Sharma 34, Kyle Jamieson 1/14, Wagner 1/28)
