Tokyo Olympics 2020: Indian women’s team outplayed by Netherlands
The Indian women’s team started on a losing note as they were outplayed by the Netherlands played at Tokyo on Saturday.
It was an aggressive start by the World number 1 side as Albers
scored a superb field goal in the 6th minute. The Indian defense was
superb as they did not allow the Netherlands attackers to counterattack. Rani
Rampal surprised the Netherlands goalkeeper to level the scores at 1-1 in the
10th minute. Netherlands earned a penalty corner in 13th
minute but could not convert it into a goal. At the end of the first half,
scores remained 1-1.
The second quarter saw the Netherlands attackers put the
Indian defense under pressure but remained solid enough. In the 6th
minute, World number 1 earned a penalty corner and was not converted. Again,
Netherlands earned their 3rd penalty corner but went past the sidebar. Indian
team showed great resistance not allowing World number 1 to score goals. Both
teams went into the half-time at 1-1.
The Netherlands got the reward for consistent pressure as they
earned a penalty corner and was converted through a deflection in the 33rd
minute to give World number 2-1 lead. It was a superb display of hockey by the
Dutch attackers on Indian defense. The Indian attackers tried their best to penetrate
Dutch but could not do it. A superb field goal resulting in the tap by Albers
to help Dutch lead 3-1 in the 43rd minute. Malta produced another
great field giving Netherlands commanding 4-1 lead. At the end of the third
quarter, Netherlands led 4-1.
The last and final quarter saw the Netherlands attackers put
enough pressure on the Indian defense. Savita Punia produced a superb save to deny
World number 1 fifth goal. Netherlands earned another penalty corner converted
by Dutch defender Maasker in the 52nd minute. The Indian team was
outplayed by the Netherlands team after being so compact during the first half.
Indian women’s team will play their next group match against
Germany on 26th July.
