Tokyo Olympics 2020: Mixed day for Indian shuttlers
The Indian badminton contingent had a mixed day as the young the pairing of Satwiksairaj RankiReddy and Chirag Shetty stunned the 3rd ranked pair while Sai Praneeth lost to Misha Zilberman of Israel on the opening day played at Musashino Forest Sports Plaza, Tokyo on Saturday.
In the Group A match, the young Indian pair stunned the World
number 3 Lee Ying and Wang Chin-inn of Chinese Taipei in three grueling games.
It was an aggressive start by the Indian pair who dominated the initial stages
taking a commanding 7-2 lead. Despite the Chinese Taipei efforts, Chirag and
Satwik had an 11-7 lead at the interval. After the break, the Indian pair upped
the ante not allowing the world number 3 to comeback into the game-winning first
game easily at 21-16.
The second game saw the Chinese Taipei pair showing great
skills and converting most of the chances, but Chirag and Satwik kept the
pressure back. Despite the efforts of Indians, Lee and Wang took a decent lead at
the interval. After the break, it was a dominating performance by the World
number 3 winning 2nd game at 21-16 despite Indian pair taking points
at the end.
It was an amazing display by both pairs in the deciding
game. Chirag and Satwik had the initial lead of 2-0 but the opponent leveled the
scores. Both pairs fought for each point moving neck to neck till 10-10. An
unforced error by Satwik allowed the Chinese Taipei pair to take an 11-10 lead at
the interval.
After the break, the Indian pair but fought back strongly to
level the scores at 13-13. Both Indians committed a lot of unforced errors and
looked on verge of losing being down 17-19. Chirag and Satwik showed grit to
level the scores at 19-19. After that, the Indian pair had chances of winning
the match, but Lee and Wang fought back strongly.
The Chinese Taipei pair had one match point but Chirag and
Satwik showed great skills to level it and won a thrilling encounter by
27-25.
Sai Praneeth loses in the first match
Sai Praneeth suffered a disappointing loss to Misha
Zilberman of Israel in two straight games. It was a superb start by the Indian
who had an 8-4 lead, but the Israel player took 5 points in succession due to an unforced
error by Sai. Thanks to an error by Misha, Sai Praneeth had an 11-10 lead at the
interval.
After the break, the Indian could not execute his strokes
giving Zilberman a decent 15-13 lead. The Israel player dominated play not
allowing Sai to enter winning the first game at 21-16.
The second game saw Praneeth committing errors as Misha
dominated the play taking an early 8-5 lead. Israel player showed class and
took 11-7 lead at the interval. After the break, Sai tried his best, but Misha
dominated the play winning the second game easily at 21-12.
He will take on Mark Caljouw of Netherlands. With this loss,
Sai Praneeth has been dented ongoing on the knockout stage.
