Tokyo Olympics 2020: Satwiksairaj and Chirag narrowly misses out
The young Indian pairing of Satwiksairaj and Chirag Shetty defeated S Vendy and B Lane of Great Britain in the last Group A match played at Mushino Sports Plaza, Tokyo on Tuesday.
Both teams started off on an even keel taking alternate
points. The Indian pair did service fault in the initial stages before putting
pressure on England pair. Chirag and Satwik hit some lovely smashes which Vendy
and Lane had no answers to. At the mid-game interval, the English pair had slender
11-10 lead. After the break, Satwik and Chirag showed their domination not
allowing the opposition a chance into the game winning it easily by 21-17.
The second game saw the Indian pair starting off aggressively
taking the initial lead. Lane and Vendy fought back strongly to take 5 points
in succession. Satwik and Chirag stormed back with great attacking shots and
grabbing an 11-7 lead at the break. After the interval, the Indian pair committed
few unforced errors as Lane and Vendy took advantage equalizing scores at 19-19.
Satwik and Chirag held their nerves to win 2 points in succession to take the
second set with 21-19.
Despite some superb performances, Satwik and Chirag Shetty
could not qualify for the quarterfinals due to Chinese Taipei beating
Indonesia. It was a three-way tie but due to better difference, third-ranked
pair of Chinese Taipei finished 1st while the number 1 ranked
Indonesian pair finished 2nd.
The Indian pair lost their 2nd match in
straight sets to the Indonesian pair that costed the young pairing quarterfinals
spot. Chirag and Satwik playing their first Olympics played brilliantly winning
2 matches in the marquee event shows the character that they displayed. In the
opening match, they defeated the Chinese Taipei pairing in three sets.
They would hold their heads high with such remarkable
performances against top double pairs.
