Tokyo Olympics 2020: Satwiksairaj and Chirag narrowly misses out

The young Indian pairing of Satwiksairaj and Chirag Shetty defeated S Vendy and B Lane of Great Britain in the last Group A match played at Mushino Sports Plaza, Tokyo on Tuesday.

Both teams started off on an even keel taking alternate points. The Indian pair did service fault in the initial stages before putting pressure on England pair. Chirag and Satwik hit some lovely smashes which Vendy and Lane had no answers to. At the mid-game interval, the English pair had slender 11-10 lead. After the break, Satwik and Chirag showed their domination not allowing the opposition a chance into the game winning it easily by 21-17.

The second game saw the Indian pair starting off aggressively taking the initial lead. Lane and Vendy fought back strongly to take 5 points in succession. Satwik and Chirag stormed back with great attacking shots and grabbing an 11-7 lead at the break. After the interval, the Indian pair committed few unforced errors as Lane and Vendy took advantage equalizing scores at 19-19. Satwik and Chirag held their nerves to win 2 points in succession to take the second set with 21-19.

Despite some superb performances, Satwik and Chirag Shetty could not qualify for the quarterfinals due to Chinese Taipei beating Indonesia. It was a three-way tie but due to better difference, third-ranked pair of Chinese Taipei finished 1st while the number 1 ranked Indonesian pair finished 2nd.

The Indian pair lost their 2nd match in straight sets to the Indonesian pair that costed the young pairing quarterfinals spot. Chirag and Satwik playing their first Olympics played brilliantly winning 2 matches in the marquee event shows the character that they displayed. In the opening match, they defeated the Chinese Taipei pairing in three sets.

They would hold their heads high with such remarkable performances against top double pairs.
