Tokyo Olympics: Indian men’s hockey team makes a good comeback
After being thrashed 1-7 by Australia, the Indian men’s hockey team produced a dominating display to beat Spain in their third Group A game played at North Pitch, Tokyo on Tuesday.
It was an aggressive start by the Indian team who put consistent
pressure on Spain's defense and did not allow Spain's team to enter circle penetration.
A superb pass by Amit Rohidas led to Simrajeet scoring his first goal of the
tournament in the 14th minute to give India a 1-0 lead. The Indian
strikers continued to press forward and earned 3 back-to-back penalty corners. India
earned a penalty stroke from a penalty corner as Rupinder Pal Singh converted it
into a goal in the 15th minute to end the first quarter with 2-0
lead.
The second quarter saw the Spanish team showed great skills
and courage to press forward putting the Indian defense under some pressure. As a
result of good pressure, Spain earned two penalty corners but failed. Despite
the Spanish team doing their best, the Indian defense was up to the mark and
did not allow the Spain team to penetrate P Srjeesh. India ended the first half
with a 2-0 lead.
Spain started off brilliantly in the 3rd quarter
but the Indian defense was solid enough. Miguel Dalas received a yellow card
for an additional player. The Indian attackers took the advantage of 1 man short
but a superb save by Cortes helped Spain to stay in the match. Mandeep Singh
tried his best to convert a goal but was well blocked by the Spanish defense. The Spanish
team was full strength but could not penetrate Indian defense. In the dying minutes
of the 3rd quarter, Spain was awarded a penalty corner as the hooter
went off. There was no drama as India averted to end the 3rd quarter
at 2-0.
Both teams played aggressive hockey in the initial stages of
4th quarter. India earned a penalty corner and Rupinder Pal Singh
converted it into a goal in the 51st minute to give them a commanding 3-0
lead. Spain pressed forward by earning 3 penalty corners in succession but
could not do anything from it. The Indian team remained calm and proved their
domination winning it by 3-0.
With this win, India moves up to 2nd place
with 6 points from 3 games. They will take on Argentina on 29th
July.
