Tokyo Olympics: Indian women’s goes down fighting
The Indian women’s hockey team showed great courage and fight before losing their second match of the Group against Germany played at South Pitch, Tokyo on Monday.
It was a good start by the German team who kept the
possession and put the Indian defense under pressure. After the initial attack,
Indian attackers tried their best but German defenders also were up to the mark.
A superb save by German goalkeeper Hauke kept India at bay. Germany earned a
penalty corner converted by Lorenz in the 10th minute to give them
1-0 lead. After the goal, Germany kept the possession and continued their
domination ending the first quarter at 1-0.
The second quarter started off aggressively for Germany as
the umpire gave it penalty corner as the decision was overturned to free out.
German attackers kept the pressure but a superb save by Savita did not put India
on the backfoot. It was a superb display hockey by Germany who did not allow
the Indian attackers to enter the circle. At the end of the first half, Germany
still led 1-0.
The Indian team could have an ideal start as they earned a
penalty corner, and the decision was overturned to a penalty stroke. Gurjit Kaur
missed the stroke as the German goalkeeper made a superb save. Soon after, Katarina
Schroder scored a superb field goal in the 35th minute to give
Germany 2-0 lead. Germany put enough pressure on the Indian defense as Vandana
Kataria made a superb save. Schroder was sent off for 2 minutes due to a green
card. Despite the efforts of India, Germany ended the third quarter at 2-0.
The fourth quarter saw the Indian forwards put pressure on
the German defense. Kataria’s shot hit the woodwork and went away. Germany
earned a penalty corner as Lorenz missed the shot. Pia Mertens missed a chance
to make it 3-0. Sharmila Devi was sent for 5 minutes. Despite, being down,
Indian defense showed class. Germany won the match by 2-0.
The Indian team lost their 2nd successive match after
being outplayed by Netherlands 1-5. They will play defending Champions Great Britain
on 28th July.
