Tokyo Olympics: Indian women’s team stay alive in the tournament

 The Indian women’s team held their nerves to defeat Ireland women’s team in a do or die encounter played at the Oi Hockey Stadium, North Pitch on Thursday.

It was an aggressive start by the Indian women’s team as they entered the Ireland circle 3 times in the initial stages. Indian team continued their attack on opposition and earned back-to-back 4 penalty corners but did not yield anything. The Indian team was not able to convert chances into goals. At the end of the first quarter, the scores remained 0-0.

Ireland team started off brightly in the second quarter putting pressure on Indian defense as Savita made some good save. Soon after, Ireland earned their first penalty corner but was not able to go past the net. The Indian team made some brilliant moves, but Ireland goalkeeper Ayiesha produced a superb save. After the initial struggle, the Indian team registered another four penalty corners but did not yield anything. Both teams went into the first half with the scoreline of 0-0. India earned 13 penalty corners in the first half but was not able to convert anyone of those into goals.

The Indian team got another chance to convert into a goal as Navneet missed one to one goal. Gurjit Kaur was not on the field. Another piece of poor drag-flick did not yield India any result in the 14th penalty corner. Savita produced another superb piece of save to deny Ireland their first goal. With both teams needing to stay alive in the tournament, both teams went into the 3rd quarter at 0-0.

Salima Tete was given a green card reducing the Indian team to 10 players. Both team's defense looked solid and denied each other goals. A superb pass by Rani Rampal and deflection shot by Navneet Kaur in the 57th minute gave India a 1-0 lead. Ireland team decided to review the decision, but the goal stood. Ireland team decided to remove the goalkeeper and bring 11th player. The Indian team remained calm and helped them register a 1-0 win.

With this win, India registered their first win of Tokyo Olympics. They need to win against South Africa in their last group match and hope that Great Britain beat Ireland.
