Tokyo Olympics: Late goals help Indian team beat Argentina

It was an aggressive start by the Indian team as they earned a couple of chances in the initial stages of the first quarter. Sumit received a
green card and sat out for 2 minutes. The Indian forward put consistent pressure
on Argentina's defense. At the end of the first quarter, the scores were level at
0-0.
Argentina started off brightly in the second quarter, but P
Srjeesh cleared the ball up before the striker could take a shot. Despite Indian
forwards showing their class, Argentina's defense was solid and did not allow
them to take shots. Before the end of the first half, India got chances to convert
but missed chances. Both teams went into the first half with a scoreline of 0-0. India
dominated the possession with 60 as compared to 40 by Argentina.
It was another aggressive start by India in the 3rd
quarter but Argentina's defense remained solid enough to deny them a goal. With
lots of pressure being put by the Indian team, they earned 2 back-to-back penalty
corners but could not do anything with that. Argentina made a move on the counterattack,
but P Sreejesh was up to the mark with a one-on-one show. Varun Kumar playing his
first game of Tokyo Olympics converted a penalty corner into a goal in the 43rd
minute to give India a 1-0 lead. The Indian forward pressed more and earned 4 back-to-back
penalty corners but yielded nothing. India earned a 1-0 lead at the end of the third
quarter.
Argentina leveled the scores with a powerful drag-flick from a penalty corner in the 48th minute. After the goal, Argentina pressed
forward and was awarded a penalty corner. India referred to the decision and was
given free out. Argentina looked dangerous and earned one more penalty corner,
but Amit Rohidas blocked the shot.

players. Soon after, Surinder received a green card. A superb piece of goal by
Vivek Sagar from close range in the 58th minute gave India a 2-1
lead. In the very next minute, India made 3-1 as Harmanpreet Singh scored from a penalty corner.
With this win, India moves up to 9 points. They will play their
last league match against Japan tomorrow. It was a superb display of hockey by
Indian team dominating first 3 quarters. Despite Argentina trying their level
best, late goals in dying minutes helped them to register a good win over
defending Champions.
By winning this match, India earned a quarterfinals berth as
they have won 3 matches out of 4 behind Australia.
